Now You'll Understand Where I Get My Soaring Height From!!!!

While I was visiting my mother at the Maples Rehab and Nursing Center in Wrentham MA this morning, I thought I'd have one of the nurses take a photo of us.  Gladys was having a good day today, and it was a good time for a photo.  Gladys will be 92 on December 1st, and she's in good health other than her Dementia.  She doesn't recognize her grandchildren when they visit and from a distance doesn't recognize me.  She has good days and not so good ones, and needs 24 hour care now.  Gladys has been in this nursing home since July 2013 and I was fortunate to get a private room and private bathroom for her.  I knew she would not be happy sharing a room.

It's unbelievable what she remembers from so long ago!!! My mother was a personal loan officer of a bank for decades and to this day remembers many names and "due dates of bank customers!!"  My mother had people working under her, but if there were collections to be made, guess who would do it!!  She ran a department that had almost no charge offs, and she handled that money just as she would her own.

This week the retired president of the bank was visiting family in the Franklin area and gave my mother a visit, too.  What a nice moment for Gladys, and it meant so much to her.  My mother was an incredible business woman, and that was a rare find in past years.

So, now you know where I get my height from and, thankfully, a small degree of her business sense!!!

What a great photo Barbara, you are so fortunate to still have your mother with you.  I lost mine two years ago, she was 85.

thank you, everyone, for your nice comments.... my mother has her own furniture in her room and that includes her desk and laptop....yes, she goes online everyday at 92 and plays scrabble.... and believe me when I say, she gives the computer "holy hell" for not accepting her version of some words!!!  I think it's quite a feat for her to go online, PERIOD at 92 ..... when her dementia was in the very early stage and she was living at home with me, she would read the newspaper on line everyday and read my posts, too.... now, she only likes to play scrabble everyday.  thanks again, everyone.....

Barbara - That's a wonderful picture of you and your mother.  I am certain it will have special meaning for you in years to come.  At first glance I was a little struck by how much your mom reminds me of my sister in appearance.  My sister, Gloria is 12 years older than I, and in many ways kind of like a second mom.  Your mother sounds like a remarkable woman, who likely blazed a lot of trails for other women because of her strong business sense!

Barbara you mother looks in fantastic shape for someone 92.  Dementia changes lives and it is not easy for family members.  My wife and I dealt with it with her Father and my Aunt.  It can be very frustrating at times.

How wonderful that your mom is still alive at that age. Dad died this year and I am so glad I squeezed as many stories out of him as I could. I hope you have already done the same. If not get a recorder and start asking questions!

I did that with Granny my husbands grandmother and I asked her if she remembered getting spankings and for what. About wood burning stoves in 1903 etc... it was wonderful. His whole family learned so much from my questions. We laugh about it to this day. RIP Granny.

Hi Barbara.  Besides being 5' nothing I also comment on nice things coming in small packages.  That's you  Your mother is a real dynamo.  Having worked collections I know how tough that job is.  Almost no charge offs.  Wow!

Your Mom looks like she is a happy person, and that's good.  Cherish her while you can.  I saw my Mom in June, she is 89 and she did not recognize me until the second day.  But on my final day she had to problem and knew who I was on sight.
