While on my recent journey to the Carolinas and Georgia, I put 2800 miles on the rental car I had those 9 days. I covered a lot of ground! While part of the travel experience was enjoying some really fine Southern and Low Country meals, there were long stretches of driving, which required that I stay close to the highways for food and gas. I'd often see signs advertising Cracker Barrel Markets; however because they were a chain, I shied away from them at first. Finally, on one afternoon, when I had driven a considerable distance, and needed gas and something to fill my stomach, I pulled in front of a Cracker Barrel, somewhere between Columbia and Charleston, South Carolina. What I found pleasantly surprised me. Cracker Barrel Markets are charming and very welcoming. They are a combination of country store with great little products, and a home style restaurant.
I selected their homemade chicken and dumplings. And, was transported back to childhood, when mom often made them for me.
I checked the http://www.crackerbarrel.com website for locations. I was curious if they were in California. Although they are in many states across the country, they apparently haven't ventured into Washington, Oregon, Nevada or California. The nearest Cracker Barrel Market to where I live would be in Idaho, Colorado, or Arizona. I wish I could entice them to open an establishment in the Greater Sacramento region.
