Speeding Past a School Bus Stop Sign
Of course we know it's illegal. So why are so many drivers blowing past school bus stop signs? In the Washington DC area, they are calling it an epidemic. An investigation by the local NBC TV station discovered thousands of drivers illegally pass school buses everyday!
In Montgomery county Maryland, school officials are taking action. They've installed cameras on the school buses with plans to add video equipment early next year. The news report shows one chilling video of a child, barely avoiding a speeding car, moments after leaving a school bus.
So we know it's illegal, we know the violations are hefty and yet drivers are still making this insane mistake. Why?
We are a Distracted Society
Our cars are so well equipped with comfort gadgets that it's easy to forget we're in a moving vehicle. I almost drove off the road trying to find the temperature knob in my new SUV! Add the cellphone distraction, which we know is illegal, and it really complicates our drive.
The guy who inspired this blog whipped his car around a stopped school bus this morning.
No one was hurt. But as he went by, his face surprised me. He was talking, fiddling with his hair and gesturing to the passenger in the car. He is the DRIVER and he has so much going on-he is oblivious to his surroundings. Pretty scary and yet not uncommon.
So What Does this Mean?
Honestly, I see myself in this guy. I have never driven past a school bus stop sign but I have most certainly been a distracted driver. I agree texting and driving is dangerous and yet as a real estate agent, I have been very tempted. But I learned something today,
When I am driving a car I will stay fully engaged as the driver
I never want to be that person who blows past a school bus, too lost in thought to see a child walking in front of my car. Life can get hectic, that is for sure, but I will keep practicing patience and my deep breathing when I am behind the wheel of a car.
