Who's Side Are You On?

If you have a post that is mounted to a deck, concrete, or resting on a base, it can sometimes become less secure then originally built. Bolts loosen, wood shrinks, or things just get worn down over time. Using a new bracket to brace up the loose post may be the answer for you.

While it may not last forever, it can very well add years to the life of the post and at little cost. There are countless custom and manufactured brackets, your job is to find the right one. Knowing how to install it helps too!

I saw this posts on a job site and had to laugh a bit because it had some glaring problems that I can see. It may look like it is helping the loose post to stay firm, but I am not fooled. This bracket has done little or no good for this matter.

First the post was wobbly in the direction of the arrows; the hand rail held it stiff in the other direction. The wobble is in the movement up high, the base was not loose. Placing the bracket in this location still allowed the bracket to flex at the bend. A slight flex in the bracket at the base allowed several inches of sway up top.

Now if this same bracket were installed on either of the two adjoining sides it could have been a lot better. Now this may not be the best bracket to support this movement putting it on the correct side would help. Putting a second bolt (see circle) would also help in securing the loose post.

Good morning Tom. But, but… You don't understand! Somebody worked very hard to put that bracket in. You know that it is doing its job – Yeah! Right!

Good morning Tom. I have seen much worse and some of the time these decks were build by so called professional. Good demonstration of what not to do.

"Little Things" matter, and little things become big things when ignored.

Tom, how many times do you see simple solutions, like tightening a bolt, ignored?  Very often, right?  "An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure."

The first tool in the toolbox should be Pride.  Taking pride in a job well done, being proud of one's knowledge & skills, and a determination to leave things better than you found them.  Having the humility to honestly assess one's need of expert advice often gets buried deep in the toolbox, and mediocrity becomes one's middle name.  This is why home inspectors are so necessary.  Right?

Good morning Tom.  Thanks for sharing and pointing out the the correct installation of a bracket.  In this business indeed we see it all.  It would have only taken a few more minutes to do the job right.

Good morning again Tom. It is scary to read this. It seems like nothing is built to be there forever. Oh well.

Tom: Your clients are well-served by your astute observations. Clearly, this was a recent band-aid, and it has not stopped the "bleeding".

Somebody putting a lot of weight on that hand rail may be in for a nasty fall.
