Who's Side Are You On?
If you have a post that is mounted to a deck, concrete, or resting on a base, it can sometimes become less secure then originally built. Bolts loosen, wood shrinks, or things just get worn down over time. Using a new bracket to brace up the loose post may be the answer for you.
While it may not last forever, it can very well add years to the life of the post and at little cost. There are countless custom and manufactured brackets, your job is to find the right one. Knowing how to install it helps too!
I saw this posts on a job site and had to laugh a bit because it had some glaring problems that I can see. It may look like it is helping the loose post to stay firm, but I am not fooled. This bracket has done little or no good for this matter.
First the post was wobbly in the direction of the arrows; the hand rail held it stiff in the other direction. The wobble is in the movement up high, the base was not loose. Placing the bracket in this location still allowed the bracket to flex at the bend. A slight flex in the bracket at the base allowed several inches of sway up top.
Now if this same bracket were installed on either of the two adjoining sides it could have been a lot better. Now this may not be the best bracket to support this movement putting it on the correct side would help. Putting a second bolt (see circle) would also help in securing the loose post.
