It is important that we maintain safe conditions around our water heaters. There are warnings in the instructions, but who reads those anyway. But it just makes sense to keep the area clear.

Water heaters need the circulation of air and free of debris. This is especially true for a gas water heater, these units have flames that can cause problems. As a heater ignites it draws air in order for the flames the burn, imagine lint or small paper and things flammable being sucked into the flame and possibly igniting that which is outside the heater unit itself.

Having a messy surrounding can quickly mean a fire inside the home. It doesn't take to much imagination to see this as a possibility. Keep the water heater areas clean.
