What is a roof certification?

I was called to look at leak damage in a low slope roof. Their inspector was concerned about the slope & clalled for a "roof certification". A yellow page roofer, for $125, gave a 5 year cert. Well, when it leaked he came out & put down the roofing tar as you see here and said his cert only covered a repair but no guarantee. It's important to read the fine print.

As a seasoned inspector I would have not considered this roof acceptable but a serious issue that likely was to be a serious problem. I wonder if this unknown inspector is still in business?

Paul, that thing is a mess. Could be the angle of the photo, but it sure looks too flat for comp to me.

The first thing that their inspector should have told them was the roof is too flat for shingles, never mind certifying. It needs to be changed to a covering that will work. This situation sounds like a poor inspector not informing his clients correctly.

Anyone who would certify that roof deserves what he gets.

I thought roofing tar and duct tape could fix anything :-)

Looks like a good fix if you are keeping the house and can't afford a roof but I certainly wouldn't sell it that way.

The place was a typical manufactured home about 12 years old. I think the problem was caused by a poor skylight installation. Like many of these homes I see, there likely is a ventilation problem causing rot in the 2x2 trusses & sheathing.
