rich dansereau, hawaii, dick dansereau, jodi dansereau Never had a beard before!

Last fall my father and stepmother decided that as part of their retired life they wanted to relocate...to Hawaii! Now this was not some decision made in haste. He had already been retired for almost two years and had spent the middle of January until the beginning of April in Hawaii for those previous two years. They had fallen in love with the islands and announced to my siblings and I after returning from their second trip that they were selling their house (and most of their belongings) and moving to Hawaii! By August of 2007, their house was sold (it was actually only on the market for 48 hours before they had a contract), many of their belongings were sold, shipped, donated, or in storage. In a five month period, they had gone from grounded and rooted in a beautiful Atlanta suburb with all the trappings of sixty plus years of life to unencumbered and active retirees! They have never been the big adventure type; they were more the vanilla ice cream type, neopolitan if they were feeling adventurous! This was a big decision and I helped them with the preparation as much as I could. A couple of months before the big move, all that was left to do was to ship their cars to Hawaii. After a bit of research on how to accomplish hassle-free long distance moving, they had devised a plan. Their plan included their cars being shipped from Atlanta to San Diego. From San Diego it would be loaded aboard a transport ship and sent directly to the island. Once this last detail in the logistics of their plan was worked out, all they had to worry about was getting to the airport here in Atlanta. That is where I, the loving son, came in. I was happy to see them off on this great adventure. I think my dad was nervous, kind of like his first day at school all over again! I know that they are enjoying their adventure as I speak to them regularly. Hopefully, I will be able to visit them in Hawaii in the near future and see just what drew my usually steady father to this new adventure!

Aloha!

Rich, I think this is awesome; they followed their dream and the lifestyle looks like it agrees with them. We should all be so adventurous, life is short. I love your title!

Packing up and moving your life to a new location takes a lot of guts and foresight.  I commend your folks for taking that big huge step and wish them all the happiness in Hawaii.  And I hope you get the chance to visit them often, and maybe they'll lure you there, too!

Christopher Price hit it right on the mark.  Lucky Mom and Pop.  And if you take Christopher's advise, lucky you.  Hawaii is beautiful, it's the only place I cried at the airport when leaving.  I told my wife, let's sell our place in New York and buy something here.  She responded "Are you crazy?"  Maybe I am, but my father always said "You don't have to be crazy, but it helps a lot"  Six months in "Aloha" and six in New York, Staten Island would be great for me.  Good luck to your folks.

Debbie - They definitely did follow their dream and I bluntly let them know that they should live their life and have fun doing it. I know that shedding so much of their material possessions was difficult but they seem so much happier now!

Christopher - It definitely does take courage! And it wasn't like they were moving to West Palm Beach but Hawaii!

Kenneth - To think my father went from small town Maine as a child, to exotic, adventuresome retiree. I wonder if Hawaii and exotic places were the things of his childhood imagination that he is now getting to live out as a retiree. We should all be so fortunate to see our childhood fantasies realized.

Way cool, Rich! Your dad and stepmom look like they have a lot of good years left in them! My wish for them is that this move is everything they hoped and dreamed it would be. Hawaii is a great place to start anew!!

Kim - They are both very active; he golfs about 3 times a week and plays tennis about twice a week and she does just the opposite. They have made some great friends there and seem to really enjoy it. In fact one of my younger brothers is getting married there next January! Should be fun!

Great for them!  And now you have free lodging when you travel to Hawaii.  Perfect.

Rich, one of the things that I hate is to move. If I can find someone to move me, I do.

Rich...Another wonderful thing is that it shows you and your sibling that excitement and adventure are part of the "more mature" years as well as when you are young.  It is great to know that a fun life can be had even at later stages in our lives.

Take care and say hi to Hawaii for me when you get there.

Danny - Moving on your own is a hassle!

Kathleen - Right on! I will have time enough to rest when I'm dead. I know from your blogs that you are quite the adventuresome world traveler!

WOW!!  That's amazing!  Good for them.  I'm sure it took a lot of courage to actually make that move, but looking at the photo, they seem to be enjoying the move and the decision!

Sandy - It definitely takes a lot of guts to up and move and that is intensified by moving to an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean that is not easily nor cheaply accessed. They are loving it!

We contemplated moving to Hawaii when my husband got a job offer, but I actually had a panic attack at the notion of being stuck on an island and it being VERY expensive to get off!  Its an amazing place to visit but I know I couldn't live there!

Sandy - I agree 100%. I look forward to visiting (one of my younger brothers is getting married there nex January) but for the same reasons you give, I too could not live there!
