Helping Children Cope With a Move

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Beam & Branch Realty TREC #547752

Moving is never an easy thing to do.  Children's fears about moving can sometimes be overlook with all of  the chaos of closing, packing and planning.  Talk to your children and take a minute to evaluate how your children are doing.  Below are some tips that might help them with the moving process.

Nesting

  •  Show them pictures of the new home & of their room or take them to see the home if possible.
  •  Assure them theat they can stay in contact with their old friends.
  •  Make a scrapbook of the old neighborhood, home, yard, schools, friends, teachers, etc.
  • Throw a good-bye party.  Have friends sign t-shirts or poster boards.
  • Make a fun video of the former home & neighborhood.
  • Have the children write good-bye letters with new return address.
  • Allow your children to decorate their packed boxes.  Will make them easy to see being unloaded too!
  • Start a scrapbook for the new home.
  • Visit new schools, parks, churches, playing fields, etc.
  • Help your children meet the new kids in the neighborhood via play dates or other activities.
  • Give them a tour of the new town or city.
  • Allow them to plan their new room; paint colors, decorations, etc.
  • Have a treasure hunt in the new home to orient them to the house.
  • Help them unpack & get their rooms organized quickly.
  • Be understanding if they are tired, grumpy or sad.  Moving is hard on them too!
  • Try and keep tempers in check even when exhausted from the move yourself.
  • Keep favorite foods and snacks on hand during the move.
  • Pack a DVD player with some of their favorite movies to keep them occupied.
  • Plan a camp out for the first night in the new house!  Make it fun!

These are just a few things that you can do to help make the move for a child less stressful!  Including them in as much as you can is also really important.  They need to know what to expect early on.

Happy moving!

Your approach to emotional support is kind of similar to mine when I do my interior design aspects of feng shui.

Sometimes, kids get me excited when I see them go into the new property and look around and ask if they could pick their room and other spots. The actions of children during moves are heart warming.

My parents waited until I was finished grade school before moving and I am very grateful for that. I know that's not always possible so these tips would certainly help.

Kids are way way more resilient than helicopter parents realize. Teach your kids you can not see the world from your kitchen window. Travel, grow, learn and don't stay in the small puddle. Venture out and realize how the rest of the world lives, how big that blue green marble is.

I love the treasure hunt idea!

When we moved we made sure to take the kids to their new school AHEAD of time so they could meet some of their classmates and on their first day they saw some friendly faces. It was fabulous!

Great list!

This is a great list for all of us. I had a seller write about moving with children and she had a going away party in each room of the old house and a welcome home party in each room of the new house. Worked well for her kids.

Lots of great comments here on both sides of the issue.  I always go with keeping the kids calm so the parents can remain calm.

I know that some agents have an issue with children accompanying when showing the parents property. I encourage it. If the kids are comfortable it makes the transition easier.

Paula - Great list. Some of these are so simple, but could really make the whole adventure a lot more personal and exciting for children.

Perfect list.  I once had a little 4 year old tell her dad that she didn't want to move to Houston because "it's noisy and I can't sleep there".  Turns out, she thought "Houston" was Intercontinental Airport and it was way too noisy to sleep!  Sometimes we have to see it from their perspective.

Good list. Making it fun and exciting for kids is a very good idea, especially for Jr. & high school age kids.
