April is Autism Awareness Month!

Today-April 2,2008 marks the first annual World Autism Awareness Day. I don't know much about Autism or know anyone who is affected by it. So I decided that the least that I can do is educate myself on this topic.

Autism is a complex brain disorder that affects a person's ability to communicate and develop social relationship. It is often accompanied by extreme behavorial challenges. The diagnosis of autism has increased tenfold in the last decade and the centers for Disease Control and Prevention has called autism a national public health crisis whose cause and cure still remains to be unknown.

Some facts about autism from http://www.autismspeak.com/ include:

Autism affects as many as 1 in 150 children and 1 in 94 boys
Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the world
More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with diabetes, cancer, & AIDS combined
Boys are four times more likely than girls to have autism
There is no medical detection or cure for autism, but early diagnosis and intervention improve outcomes
Autism does not discriminate by geography, class, or ethnicity

The first ever World Autism Awareness Day gives opportunity to people in every country of the world to raise awareness about autism and Asperger's Syndrome and raise funds for autism organisations.

Timely post, Lanre. There needs to be more public awareness of mental disorders and how it affects so many people.

Shirley - Absolutely. I am shocked to discover that they cause to autism is still unknown. God help us. Thanks for your comments.

Lanre- This disorder seems to be touching more lives each year, it does present unique issues. Just another thing we would like to see prevented.

My grandson was diagnosed with PDD-NOS (autism spectrum) in September- The diagnosis is devastating to the family, but there is hope! My daughter, after the initial shock of the news decided to meet this head on. So, she bought Jenny MC Carthy's book " Louder Than Word" and we became aware of DAN ( Defeat Autism Now). Luckily, we live within a short distance to a world renowned DAN doctor. Dr Bock in Rhinebeck NY.

Nathan has been receiving early intervention with ABA Therapy, play therapy. speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. Five weeks ago our Nathan was seen by Dr Bock and began treatment- The change is miraculous. The eye contact is improving and the words are coming at incredible speed. Nathan will be three on the April 7th. It is amazing to see him "climbing through the window of autism" as Jenny McCarthy calls the recovery. THERE IS HOPE!

We need to support autism awareness- Thank you for your message, Lanre- It is my message too! Let's all work together to DEFEAT AUTISM NOW!

Lanre, What a wonderful post. Thank you so much for helping to raise awareness. I have a friend with an Autistic son and it's so difficult for them right now. Fortunately more world-wide attention is now being paid to Autism and those who are diagnosed with the disorder.

Hello, my son Dalvon has Autism(PDD).Dec. I made my mind up to face this head on so I quit both my jobs, Im a dental asst.- nail tech, both of those jobs were easier then taking care of my son. Caring for him is hard enough,cant explame it you have to live in my shoes.Poeple are so blind that they just dont get it because my son dont like the part of a child with a disablity they think that he is just BAD and dont talk. I thank you for learning about Autism, I wish more people were like and stop judging all GOD can jugde and GOD gave me this child to raise for a reson and i will not let he down so were is the help we need has parents because the numders are now 1 in166 kids are dianosed. All programs for Autism have 8 to 10 years waiting list to long or coast. My income went from 2400 a month to 674, there gose my house and car,im ok with that but as a single parent I need moreHELP. What can I do to get more one on one HELP?

Hello again, Im so sorry about yesterday but I had to vent. Some day are good and some are just bad, yesterday was bad. Im a proud mother of 5, first 4 are normal kids(what ever normal means,we all have something wrong with us,only one person was made prefect JESUS) and with my baby boy the last of the bunch God made him special and yes he is very special because he is like ten or more kids in one.LOL With me now wanting to face Autism, so that I can help me learn all I can to help Dal, and what Im finding out is not good. Not just for those that dont now but for parents that have kids with Autism, parents need to be the speaker for their child, if not you then who. I trying so hard to get the word and info on Autism around but it going to take more then just one or two, like Big Mama said " It takes a fist to made a big punch" not saying going around hinting people just come together and fight this.A lack of resources or money can stop somethings but a voice can be heard. You are so right when you said that God will do great things with Dal,I see it and feel it. I thank you so much for getting back with me so fast, I was just going to send you a new comment. After getting some rest and getting some of my brain back I would talk with some sense. That comment yesterday is a great example on how caring for a child with Autism can sometime make you feel, its like everything runs together and you cant think.I pray for all family going though this because its not no joke. God dont put no more than what we can handle on us so just look to him for all your answer. And yes the numbers have changed from 1 in 166 to 1in 150. Autism Awareness has a puzzle piece. the puzzle reflects the mystery and complexity of Autism Spectrum Disorder(ADP). The different colors and shapes represent the diversity of the people and families living with the condition. The brightness of the colors symbolizes hope - HOPE that through research, increases awareness of Autism, understanding, acceptance and through early intervention and appropriate treatment, people with Autism will lead fuller, more complete lives.
