The Pause That Refreshes

By

RefreshCoca Cola had this catchy ad campaign many years ago that said if you drank a Coke, it was

           THE PAUSE THAT REFRESHES

I am convinced from myself and watching others we need to FORCE ourselves to do this refreshment trick with technology every two or three years. My hard disk finally crashed on a laptop and I got a new one with the new Vista operating system. A friend's cell phone was going on four years old, falling apart, battery not lasting long, and he finally is going to get another one. A woman title company officer I know complained her first generation Blackberry PDA didn't have some kind of back space function and everyone in her office said she had the oldest model.

Getting new "updated" technology from time to time just feels good. You get refreshed. Quit being cheap and stodgy. Spend some bucks and REFRESH!!!

I will use the darn thing until it quits.  Not sure why.  Creature of habit.

Hi Gary,

Perhaps if you wrote this a couple of weeks ago I wouldn't had waited until my hard drive crashed...or not! :)

at times I feels like a snail trying to keep up with a sprinter!!!!! But if you want to survive in this world you have to "refresh".

Gary, Great video, I almost forgot that saying:  The Pause that refreshes!  I was just going to buy myself a laptop because I really do need one but I'm getting the house done first...and then I can't wait :)

Hi Gary - I tend to hang on to old stuff, my husband wants the new gadgets, but never learns how to use them - we should combine forces!

And welcome to the age of consumerism!!   :)  I got a laptop when my desk top (a hand me down from my teen aged sons) died.  I did get a Treo a few years back- it was my 50th birthday present to myself.  But new toys are always fun!!

Jeff: A fresh phone makes you feel like the old one was so dated.

Brian: Kind of like getting a brand new car.

Dave: I know that feeling.

Linda: That's how I mainly have been. I have to try and do better.

So true!  'Just got another laptop, though, and I hate that transition period.

Margaret: Adapting to the "new" stuff does crimp our style for awhile, but we figure it out. I think we all hate instruction manuals.

I'm finding I don't as excited about change as I used to......hmmm now why is that? lol......but I do have a new laptop........2 weeks later - despite the Vista ge I'm excited about it.......I think its just a delayed reaction...........its like the Coke video....sometimes I have to go through a few 'loops' before the 'excitement' kicks in!  :-)

And buying the new stuff makes jobs for others and keeps us all in the money.  Everything in moderation.

I love new toys but I'm with Margaret - the transition period is my only issue... although apparently not enough to stop me from buying them. :)

Funny with all of this technology!  You no sooner walk out the door with it and it is dated!  I am a geek though - if someone has one better than me or does a new trick I just gotta have it!!!!  Probably something I'll never need or use but I gotta have it!

I must fit the "cheap and stodgy" profile.  I don't purchase anything new technology wise until the "old" is broken or until it is so outdated that it would harm my business.

Liz: Excitement happens when we see that the new state is "better." I found that with a wireless mouse.

Robert: Keep the economy going but don't spend like a drunk sailor.

Jesse & Kathy: Change is the tough part till you get through it I agree.

Leesa: That's like driving off the new car lot, and then all of a sudden there's something better you are right.

Missy: Macs would seem more stable I would say, yet more incompatible in the business world.

Kris: So you are not an early adopter?: ) A late adopter? That's ok too. Whatever works for you.

Julie: We all need a "refresh" break in many areas. SO true.

I agree we need to keep current and productive with our technology, but we also need to be prudent with our expenditures. Some of us are better than others at making purchases within our budgets.

GARY, Your Vista experience must have started out better than my Vista experience has.  I'm adjusting and trying to find things I like about it and I have actually found some.  I keep thinking my TREO 650 will bite the dust as I bought insurance but it just keep ticking.  There's really nothing that I need it to do that it doesn't so I'm just going to wait it out.

Rosario: Nothing wrong at all with watching the expenses. I am all for it. But sometimes, just sometimes, it is nice to have the latest toy, and be the first on the block to have it. I think I am regressing to Christmas morn, age 7. Sorry  : )

Marchel: My Vista experience started out with the darn operating system crashing with regularity with some kind of blue screen of death until it automatically loaded two new updates. It's behaved better lately. With cell phones they seem like they get outdated after two to three years. But they have so many features BESIDES just being a phone or phone/PDA. Wait till we all get to the next gen 3G cellular on the phones. Then the browsers will go much faster, similar to Wi-Fi. I've seen the speeds and technology for 4G and then the world's going to really take off in the mobile device category.
