RED HOOK COMMONS - RED HOOK

In early December I did a post on the construction of the Red Hook Commons as you will notice what a difference a couple months make.  This facility will probably be ready for occupancy in the summer and the application process will get started in another 4-6 weeks.

This complex when completed will consist of 96 units and is being done in 2 phases.  These apartments will be very affordable, the monthly cost ranging from $285-$663.

The location of Red Hook Commons is very good, it is possible to walk into the village and I am sure some sort of transportation will be available to those without cars.

                                                              ARBOR RIDGE - RHINEBECK

Just south of Red Hook there is a senior complex going up in Rhinebeck.  This is the Arbor Ridge at Brookmeade.  This will be situated on 75 acres; already on this property is an assisted living facility called "the Baptist Home."  When completed there will be 54 independent apartments consisting of 1 or 2 bedrooms and  26 assisted living suites.

These apartments will be available to seniors age 62 and older and for the level of amenities will be geared more to those seniors with higher income.  I was also told that if an independent senior gets to the point where they need assisted living they would have priority at The Baptist Home.

TOWNE CENTRE - PINE PLAINS

This adult fifty five plus complex will consist of 48 townhouses and will be completed in four phases.  The units will be around 1400 sq. ft. and will have a basement for storage.  Phase 1 is presently available for purchase with price ranging from $279,000-$305,100.

Developers and municipalities are now coming to the realization that the needs of this segment of the population will have to be addressed. A cookie cutter approach might not be the answer, because people are in different stages of aging, having different needs, and there is a wide gap in finances.

Jennifer, we are also in the process of completing a building with the same number of units as your "Red Hook Commons" here in downtown Middletown.  Our building even looks almost the same as yours, and was also built for affortable housing.

George that is really good news, I am sure those 48 seniors in your area will be very happy.  So many seniors are on fixed income and between the high housing cost and taxes it is hard to make ends meet.  I sincerely hope we will be seeing more and more of this type of construction because the number of seniors is growing.  The way we treat our seniors or lack of is an indication of who we are.

Jennifer,

I think many of us from other parts of the country associate NY and indeed most of the east coast with high housing costs. IThe affordability of the units you describe is surprising. But how encouraging! Your area may be setting an example and may become a model for providing housing for a deserving sector of our community.

Eloise:  The elderly are on fixed income so most of them would not be able to pay the prevailing rents.  I know of several other facilities in the region that keep this in mind.

With the senior population growing this is an issue that will have to be addressed by more local governments.
