Fall Has arrived and the Colors have Gone
Like my friend, George Souto, I have offered a sequence of posts on the change of colors in our area. The area George has high lighted is almost the exact geographic center of the state in Middlesex County. I have focused on the Southern portion of Litchfield county specifically Crestbrook Park in Watertown CT. The park has some excellent views when on the golf course, and the panorama of the hills from the top of the second tee is breath taking.
This is a shot of the hole in mid summer when all is green. The hill in the foreground is about 1/2 mile away in a straight line.
Over a span of a month the change in colors was noticeable and on Oct 12 they seemed to be at their most vivid. By the following weekend the colors were still sharp and evident but it is obvious that many of the leaves were starting to disappear from the limbs.
Early this afternoon I took a ride to the top of the second hole to take what will probably be the last shot showing colors on the trees. There may be very little to see next week.
Unlike the center of the state, Litchfield County tends to get cooler earlier and there is always higher accumulations of snow in winter. While the lower portions of the state will probably not peak for at least another week, this area has passed.
We had a wonderful display this fall, and I still have a few additional photos that I will spot in when suitable. We are fortunate in Connecticut that we have such a diverse topography, and the history of the state has always been of hills covered with dense trees.
I know I will enjoy the shades and hues as what will follow will be far less colorful and offer less comfort.
