                                                       Various shops and office buildings

The Roundout is now a vibrant community where, especially on the weekend, you will find people walking around visiting shops and sampling the varied cuisine at the many new restaurants.

This was once a separate village but in 1872 became part of Kingston which as you might know was the first capital of New York.

This area was well suited for commerce because of the location; situated near the Roundout Creek and Hudson River.  This was a thriving community.  Economic growth went hand in hand with access to the most popular mode of transportation at the time, shipping. From this area was shipped cement, bricks, and bluestone items necessary for building in areas such as New York City.

The Mansion House Hotel was also a place where travellers would stop over to be refreshed.   Today the Mansion House Hotel is now Mariner's Habour, a restaurant where visitors can disembark from their boats or yachts to enjoy the restaurant's famous seafood.   Up the road can also be found the Steel House, once a steel company on the canal it is now a restaurant and a popular place for weddings because of the views of the Hudson River. Some wedding parties have been known to take a boat from nearby Rhinebeck and dock right along the restaurant.

Just across from the Steel House can be found the Trolley Museum, and close by is the Hudson River Maritime museum.

It is also possible to take a dinner cruise down the Hudson River and enjoy a spectacular view of the countryside.  In the summer, you will see people dining near the water in the area called West Strand Park. There are outdoor bands and other celebrations occurng all season.

Not to be overlooked are the many small shops.  So, after dining stop in to take a look at the wares.

This is a great place to visit, so come by boat or the Thruway. It is also located about 10-15 minutes from Red Hook and Rhinebeck and also a short drive to Woodstock.

Jennifer,

As a child I used to spend much of my summers with my grandparents up in Woodstock, right outside of Kingston. I loved it up there.  They lived in Shady on 212.  It is a fabulous place with a stream out back, a mountain right behind it and a wild apple orchid across the road, just up the road from the post office and the quarry.  We (10 grandchildren) would have adventures either thru the stream or up on the ridge thru the woods up to the reservoir and spend lazy summer afternoons skimming rocks and goofing off, come home covered in mud and grass stains.  My grandmother would hose us down out back before we were allowed back in the house.  I have many wonderful memories of shopping trips into Kingston with my grandmother,  Woodstock didn't have the goods.

Kingston is a wonderful town, I used to enjoy our trips there.  My grandmother was a very creative soul, and we would frequent all of the craft shops, I would be in seventh heaven.  The entire area is just beautiful, laced with gorgeous country homes, renovated barns and gorgeous scenery.

One of the most charming things I remember about the town of Woodstock was the stream running behind the cottages along the road, in town.  I just thought that was too kewl.  I also loved the unique shops.

I understand the Woodstock area has become a mecca for the music industry.  It was then too, but in a much quieter way, nobody really knew they were there then.  I guess the advent of Woodstock 2 really drew them in.

In the 60's so many people were drawn to Woodstock, not really understanding that this was not the site of the festival.  The festival was held in White Lake on Yasgar's farm, but it made Woodstock an incredible place to be.

What a wonderful place to sell real estate.

My grandmother has been gone for some time and I have not been back up that way in many years.  Thank you for the trip down memory lane, those were special times.

Laurie, your childhood memories sound wonderful.  It is still a beautiful area and I am happy that even area that had gone down hill, especially after IBM left the area is doing great now.  Just a few years ago in the Roundout area you would see many empty buildings, these have been restored and the area which has a waterfront is now a favorite of weekenders.

In the major shopping area every time I turn around there is another new store.  Here is hoping you will visit the area again in the future.

Thanks for stopping by.

My wife and I met in 1994. She worked in Albany and I worked in Orangeburg. We would meet in the  Rondout when we were dating. We still go to Ship to Shore and stop at Mariners which was Mary P's back then.

The Rondout is a great place to go and hang out. It;s quiet and fun.

Thanks for the tour. Where are we going next week????

John I can see why you chose to go there, I love to be near the water and good food doesn't hurt.  Where are we going next? I have a couple ideas but you will just have to wait.

Have a good weekend.

Jennifer, I've been enjoying your Hudson Valley posts.  My grandpa used to take me to Rondout as a child, as he visited the hardware and plumbing supply stores for projects he needed to do.  Roundout was much more run down in those days.  I'm looking forward to being able to visit again, to see what an interesting area it has become.
