Early Alert: Fall Back on Sunday November 2, 2014 in Katy and Beyond

I am writing to blog as an early alert reminding everyone in advance of the time change which will happen this coming Sunday. It is very easy to forget and obviously havoc can ensue.  We all live crazy lives based on time. It is the time of year to think about the end of Daylight Savings Time (DST) and setting your clocks, watches and timepieces back one hour. On Sunday November 2, 2014 at  2 AM officially, daylight savings time ends and all timepieces need to be reset one hour back. I always use the old saying of “ Spring Forward and Fall Back” to remember what we have to do with setting the time. I advocate setting timepieces back when you go to bed unless you plan to be awake at 2 AM. I already know I will not be awake at 2 AM.

Some countries around the World such as Russia and Japan do not observe Daylight Saving time while in Brazil, some parts observe DST and others do not not. The US government does not mandate states to observe DST and residents in the Navajo Native American  Reservation, Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands do not follow DST.

The origin of DST actually believe it or not goes all the way back to Ben Franklin who coined the phrase “ early to bed and early to rise. While he was ambassador to France, Mr. Franklin, who was certainly way ahead of his own era in so many ways, figured out how beneficial it would be to make better use of daylight.

The US government standardised DST in 1918 but allowed states to decide whether to observe or not. During WW II the US made DST mandatory to save valuable resources. Since the end of WW II  the observance by all the states has been optional.  However, during the Arab oil embargo of 1973-1974, the US once again made DST mandatory for the entire winter period of time. The saving were about a 1 percent decrease in the usage of electricity. Studies done in recent years show no savings or an actually an increase in energy consumption occurs during DST months while other research studies indicates the opposite. I am not sure what to believe. Anyone out there got an opinion?

I personally like DST as it really helps with my Real Estate business and doing chores around the home. I can still show properties late in the afternoon and during the early evening during the months of  DST. I can do things outside or in garage. I also find it very depressing to drive home in mostly darkness during the early evening once DST ends. Do you like DST?

I want daylight savings time all the time....and most farmers would prefer that, too.  I know that they instituted daylight savings time mostly for farmers in the first place, so let's just keep it!

I usually absolutely loathe "fall back" time.  But, for some reason, this year, I'm looking forward to it.  I'm even looking forward to winter, which I simply don't understand.  Something must have created a paradym shift within me!
