I read this article today:

"Always buying sneakers? It's the sign of a leader: poll

Tue Apr 1, 9:50 AM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - Got a passion for buying sneakers? It could be a good sign, with a poll finding that people who buy three pairs of sneakers or more a year are far more likely to be a leadership type that other people.

Mindset Media, a media company that examines personality traits of different consumers, found that people who buy more than three pairs of sneakers a year are 61 percent more likely to have the qualities of a modern leader."

This begs the question: running any business and especially one like a Home Staging business requires leadership skills. Without leadership skills, it would be hard to make sales happen and influence people towards your creative vision. I'm on my 2nd pair of sneakers so far this year (including the Pumas pictured above) and now I think I see another pair in my not so distant future :)

What about you? Do you think buying sneakers is a sign of leadership?

Here is some more from the story:

"These qualities were defined as having ideas and vision, and a style with others that is both inclusive and decisive.

The survey of 7,500 people, using market research group Nielsen's online panel, found multi-sneaker buyers were 50 percent more likely to be very assertive and 47 percent more likely to be spontaneous.

Lauren Arvonio, a spokeswoman for Mindset Media, said sneaker buyers were more likely to fly by the seat of their pants.

"It is often said you can tell a lot about a person by the shoes they wear, and now we have some hard data to back that up," Arvonio told Reuters.

"What is interesting is that these personality traits held true across the board, regardless of age, income, or gender."

Hmmm..I buy a new pair of dress shoes about every three months...but my sneakers are replaced every couple of years.  Wonder what THAT says!

Perhaps that you dress to impress?

As we say in Showhomes, 'presentation is everything' - no matter how great a leader you are, sneakers don't make a great first impression for new clients, do they?

What fun info - I definitely feel more "sporty" and active when I wear my sneakers. I think I am less likely to overeat or engage in mindless snacking, too.

Now I am going to make it a point to wear out my sneakers!!!

I'm afraid my shoe fetish does not include sneakers. What does that make me? Oh yeah...female! ;)

Heels - yes send them my way.  Sneakers for walks, of course but I wear them far too long. I just don't get that excited about a new pair of sneakers.

I have 5 pair and they are all different, what does that say about me?  Please don't answer that! Ha!

Ha - I try to stay away from heels - not such a good look for me :)

I just bought my second pair in a year, but that is only because for some reason the first pair suddenly became too small.  I hope this isn't true, because I doubt I will buy 2 more pair before a years time.

Interesting premise.  It would be interesting to do a poll of AR members.  I don't work in sneakers-only use them for gardening and walking the dog.  Could probably use a new pair but it is so low on my list of things to do, which I suspect may be true for a lot of people.

Maybe the poll should address "dress" shoes instead!

I wear sneakers and jeans with a logo shirt when I stage or oversee moving. I dress in pants and loafers when meeting with customers. It never fails, though - even if you want to wear jeans, wear nice ones because you never know when you'll meet a Realtor or home owner!

Ah, I just buried a pair of sneakers after having them for about 3 years...I only wear them walking and when it's too cold to wear flip flops.  Socks and sneakers ruin the polish on my toes!  =)

Interesting, though.

Ha! Abby -

I haven't had the problem about my sneakers ruining my nail polish......that's probably a good thing :)

I can only say that I have a very wealthy client and he owns a whole room specifically designed for his sneakers

We staged a home in Little Rock for an NBA player from Memphis. He lived alone and one of the walk in closets was nothing but floor to ceiling stacks of sneakers - I think 3 a year is a good number and I buy in to the idea that it relates to leadership qualities. It takes a certain personality to start and run a business and it makes sense to me that that personality profile would gravitate towards active shoes, even if they are only worn for working out.

I have 4 pairs that I interchange.  I bought a pair specifically for staging that I just wear indoors.  I stumbled across them quite by accident in a store.  They are white with brown and green trim with green laces.  My company colours are brown and green so I HAD to buy them.  I wonder what that says?  hmmm

P.S.  I wrote a blog about them - (I hope the link below works)

Hmmmm...perhaps 1 new pair a year? I have some running shoes and walking shoes from years ago that are my favorites. I know I should ditch them but they've treated me well and I feel like I'm lighter than air when running.  Can't find many these days that do that!

For FUN shoes though...perhaps 6 a year?

I'm going shopping today...I'm buying sneakers...at least 6 pairs....and some pumps...and some ballet flats...and a mirror...some framed art...candles...but sneakers first!

Thomas,

Very interesting study.  Does this statistic still pertain to those who bought theirs at the Buy 2 get 1 FREE SALE?

Do those "Sketcher" shoes count? You know the ones that are as comfortable as sneakers, but not as bulky?? If so, sign me up for a leadership AWARD!

Michelle - I don't know about 2 for 1!

Amber - I'm not sure about Sketchers, either :)

MMM, sneakers eh, well I guess if they are designer sneakers and Marshall's has them for a good price, lol. We ladies prefer ten pairs of regular fashionable shoes to every pair of sneakers!!

05/20/2008 10:17 AM by Lori Howard (Hope Designs)

That is so interesting, maybe us leaders tend to do more and so we wear out our shoes quicker! I wonder what it says about you when you buy other types of shoes?

Well, walking out of my sneakers so I can get another pair....does having one in my second home count?

I buy sneakers twice a year only because I am on the elyptical or treadmill everyday so I wear them out.  I do not like sneakers other than that.  Never have, and I was in a leadership roll for many years!

06/03/2008 10:11 PM by JoLynn Pipkin, DCC (Simple Details Redesign, LLC)

I haven't bought a pair of sneakers in years.  What does it mean if you buy more than 3 pairs of high heels in a year??

I buy a new pair of Puma's to wear for Staging every three months. I actually got  a job from buying so many pairs. The sales person in the store asked me why I was buying so many pairs of Puma's. I let her know what I did for a living and she said I was just the person she was looking for as she was going to be listing her home soon. Never estimate the power of buying shoes!!!!

P.S. My daughter has over 150 pairs of shoes. We are the same size and as she cannot possibly wear them all more than once before she is off buying more. So I dip my toes into the shoe pool. When she went away to school and took her shoes with her it was a shock to me. Every time I put on an outfit to go out and went to put on dress shoes I didn't have anything to wear. The first few weeks were awful as I had never realized before how many pairs of shoes I did not own. Do I hear shopping bells ringing?

I also wear Pumas to stage in - they look great and are really comfortable :)

You should use some excess shoes to stage some closets -

I have bought 7 pairs of sneakers in the past 2 months...what does that make me????Now I'm concerned...do I have a problem...lol...great post Thomas!

07/01/2008 11:22 AM by Stacey Holt (Setting the Stage)

Tom~It was funny to see this post making the rounds again as I just thought of you and this blog not very long ago.  I broke my baby toe by a run in with the vacuum cleaner and had no choice but to have to go out and buy a pair of sneakers.  I was feeling both clumsy and destined for greatness as I hobbled to the register with my new purchase.  Just wanted you to know that you were a bright spot in my other wise not so bright day!

Cheers!

Hmmm...I have about 7 pairs of sneakers but can't say I buy 3 each year. Like other comments above new heels is a different story!

If I could stage in 5" stilettos I would! I could do it, but I would be hurting before long - for sure!

I love my pumas to death, and my diesels look great if do say so myself.
