Peters Gate is a very desirable Monterey, CA neighborhood that is located near downtown Monterey. Peter’s Gate, as everyone locally calls the area, has been a favorite Monterey neighborhood for locals forever! And what is not to like about it! There are three city parks in this neighborhood, Via Paraiso Park, Whispering Pines Park and Veterans Memorial Park all within walking distance. In addition, you can walk to downtown Monterey from just about anywhere in this neighborhood! The streets are quiet for the most part and the homes are all well kept! Monterey High School and Colton Middle School are both in this neighborhood as well, making it especially popular with families.
Peter’s Gate gets its name from artist Charles Rollo Peters, a painter from San Francisco who enjoyed the local artist scene in Carmel and especially loved painting the old Monterey adobe’s in various state of ruin. He owned a gated 30 estate which he later sold and was subdivided into what is now referred to as the Peter’s Gate neighborhood. This neighborhood exudes charm and although it is so close to downtown Monterey, you feel as though you are out in the suburbs.
Peter’s Gate real estate is best defined as eclectic. Like most of the Monterey peninsula, Peter’s Gate really started to grow in the 1910’s through the 1950’s and you will see plenty of homes here from that era.
