Ask Michael Hellickson: Listings or Buyers? Where should my focus be?

I was recently asked, "Michael, should I focus my time looking for buyers, or listings?"

My response was simple, "It depends."

Almost everyone who has been in the business for any length of time will tell you that you must "List to Last", and to some extent, it's true. Usually.

The fact of the matter is, not everyones skill set and/or personality is well suited to being a listing agent. Frankly, many agents were "Born" to be buyers agents!

One is not necessarily better than the other. In fact, being a listing agent when you're uniquely suited to being a buyers agent is like holding a medical license and trying to paractice real estate.

Ideally, you want to be able to lose yourrself in your work because you love it, not because you are a slave to it.

Being a buyers agent, especially on the right team, doesn't mean the suspension of your dreams, but more likely the realization of them. You likely dream of financial independence, control over your schedule and destiny, the ability to vacation once in a while, spend time with friends and family etc.

Those dreams can be attained as a buyers agent just as easily as a listing agent given the right circumstances.

True, there is a certain amount of glamour and prestige that comes from being the team leader, and seeing your name next to Michael Hellickson or Jay Kinder in the Wall Stret Journal, but does that stuff really matter?

Aren't quality of life and work-life balance more important than money and recognition?

Don't get me wrong, making money is great. While it is true that money can't buy happiness, someone who makes it and then loses it, and then makes it again ill tell you "I've had money, and I've been broke, and I've found it easier to enjoy life with money than ithout it.".

Theappeal of money is too often tied to what someone else makes, or the things other people have or enjoy that we covet.

Quit trying to keep up with the Joneses, focus on living well within your means, and pick a career path that you find enjoyable and fulfilling. Doing somwillm bring you far greater happiness and joy than money alone.

Don't try to be a Michael Hellickson or a Jay Kinder, but rather, be the best you that you can be. And guess what, that is the best any of us can do!
