The Case of the Smoke Detector that Would Not Stop Chirping
There may come a time when I look back on this and will laugh ... but not today.
I am absolutely exhausted. I slept about 2.5 hours before the chirping started. I was awakened at 12:30am to the sound of a chirping smoke detector.
Not a problem - or so I thought. Just get up and change the battery. The smoke detector is wired with a battery back-up. I changed the battery. It still chirped.
I removed the battery and pressed the reset button. Still chirping.
I put the battery back in and pressed the reset button. It still chirped.
I removed the battery and I cut the power to the house. I still chirped.
WHAT ... how can that be?
I put the power back to the house and went to the Internet. I read articles and watched videos on how to stop the chirping. NOTHING WORKED.
At 2:30am my Cockatiel Mikey, who has dementia, starts singing and chirping along with the smoke detector.
I did not know what else to do. I wanted to cut the wires but was fearful of doing so. The fact that it was still chirping with no power to the house caused me to question, was the power really off?
That thing chirped all night. I called my electrician first thing this morning. He cannot get someone here until 6pm this evening.
I called my inspector, also a contractor, and he is working in another county today … he can’t get here.
By 9:30am I am so tired my body is shaking inside. I have not slept. My smoke detector is chirping. My bird is chirping. I am ready to jump out my window - I cannot take the chirping any more.
I called my sister, so she could be on the phone with me when I cut the wires – just in case I fried myself. Someone would need to come take care of Mikey.
I cut the darn wires and removed the smoke detector. I taped the exposed wires with electrical tape.
Tomorrow I will buy a new smoke detector with a 10 year lithium battery. No more wired smoke detectors for me.
May that darn chirping smoke detector rest in peace!
May I rest this evening in peace and quiet!
