Mint Julep...OR...Mojito?

rich dansereau, cherry blossom, spring, atlanta
Spring is here! The cherry blossoms have been in bloom for a couple of weeks with there brilliant white flowers that are even now beginning to be replaced with the green leaves! Soon the crepe myrtles will be putting on their dazzling display of pink, purple, fuschia, or white clusters of cascading flowers. The doors are all flung open, providing warm breezes during the day and cooler breezes at night! This is a marvelous time of year to live in Atlanta! Even the azaleas are in full showy display!

I know some of you are still in the grips of winter but I promise warmer weather and beautiful colors will be arriving soon!

So, as a southerner, one of the questions you must ask yourself is...
rich dansereau, atlanta, mint julep, BBQ, spring, drink OR rich dansereau, atlanta, mojito, BBQ, spring, drink
These are both great options to go along with the beer, soft drinks, sweet iced tea, and water. Both are sweet and served over crushed ice! An added treat is that many people in the south have cultivated and/or wild mint in their yards or gardens that can definitely be used for either drink and added to that sweet southern iced tea! Both are easy to prepare:
Mint Julep
6 fresh mint sprigs
2 tsp. simple syrup
3 oz bourbon
Add the mint leaves and simple syrup to the glass and muddle gently.
Fill the glass with crushed ice.
Add bourbon and stir.
Top off with additional crushed ice.
Garnish with the remaining mint.
Mojito
3 fresh mint sprigs
2 tsp. sugar
3 tbsp. fresh lime juice
1.5 oz light rum
club soda
Crush part of the mint with a fork to coat the inside.
Add the sugar and lime juice and stir thoroughly.
Top with crushed ice.
Add rum and stir.
Top off with "chilled" club soda.
Garnish with a lime slice and the remaining mint.
Whichever option you choose, I hope you enjoy a safe and fun spring season with your friends and family!

Rob that is funny.  Out of the 2 I would say Mojito in the hot summer and Julep for the Derby.

Well... I'll have to try one of each & let you know what I think!  : )

Rob - I like my beer as well!

Jeff - Have a Mint Julep without having to wear a funny hat! The Mojitos are great for the pool or beach.

Chris - Sounds like a plan. There will definitely be a difference because of the different liquors (and the lime gives the Mojito a twist).

Debbie - That is my choice too! I had some really good Mojitos (and a great dinner) at Yuca on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach and would definitely recommend it if you make it to the Miami Beach/South Beach area! In the meantime you can just mix some up at home while relaxing!

Mojito, Please.  I can't quite wrap my imagination around mint in my bourbon.  I would be willing to give it a try, though.

Debbie - If you plant mint (or peppermint) in your yard it will take over but it is wonderful to be able to pick either fresh from your yard. It is nice to plant in the crevices of natural pathways too as it smells so nice when crushed underfoot!

Elaine - mojito, yuca restaurant, south beach, florida, miami, miami beach I hope you like it...sorry about the ashtray in the photo!

Rich, that's a good idea. I did plant mint at a previous home and it did spread. I have a bank that is a problem I wonder if it would do well there, wouldn't need mowing. I forgot to mention, your photo's are beautiful!

Mojito all the way.  You know it's really hard to find places that know how to make a good mojito!  During the early spring, Target carry's their 'bucket' drink mixes and they have Mango Mojito and it is FANTASTIC.  I think I need to go whip up a bucket of that right now!

Thanks for the recipes!

Debbie - Mint (peppermint or spearmint are the most common) usually grows well in full sun to partial shade! This invasive plant is more controllable in partial shade and requires consistently moist soil. If your bank is full sun to partial shade and usually has moist soil, then go for it! Thanks for the compliment! I took the azalea photo today in my back yard; the weeping cherry, taken a week to 10 days ago, is in a huge glazed pot in my front yard and is definitely the focal point. I can't wait for the irises and lilies to push their way through the mulch later this spring!

Tricia - Mango Mojito, now that is a twist! Enjoy your drink! Maybe I'll go mix up a drink myself! Thanks for reading and commenting!

Rich, I am with Chris, can I get 3 of each and get back to you at a later time?

04/03/2008 07:49 PM by Danny Thornton (Home America Mortgage, INC.)

I've never tried either, but I think the Mojito sounds wonderful.... especially if you put a little coconut cream min there too.  mmmm

04/03/2008 09:53 PM by Georgina Hunter Maui Realtor R(S) (Jim Sanders Realty Inc. - Maui)

Danny - As long as you are not driving you can have what you like!

Georgina - It would probably rev up the sweetness...the mojito is a bit tart but go for it! Tricia was talking about mango mojito, so that has to be sweet too! You may be onto something...

Rich: I had my first mojito in Hawaii last summer....and now I'm hooked!!  (Well, not hooked, exactly, but I enjoy them every once in a while.)

I am looking forward to trying these recipes. Love the flowers. I live in Idaho and sell real estate in Utah and we are still experiencing winter. Tonight I am in Florida and will go back to the cold tomorrow :(.

04/06/2008 09:39 PM by Julie Kippen Vernal Utah Real Estate (Century 21 Dart Realty)

Dana - No doubt, I like Mojitos!

Cindy - Nothing wrong with a little Tequila!

Julie - At least you got a reprieve from the cold for a little while! Glad you like my pictures. I took them both in my yard! Both drinks are great in their own way, I would give them both a try; a little variety!

04/06/2008 10:59 PM by Rich Dansereau Loan Officer Knoxville TN (Home America Mortgage)

I ended up with a little more time in the sun. I was stand by on my flight this more and missed getting on by one seat! I will time again tonight. I am enjoying the weather and the scenery. I travel a lot and love to take picture of flowers every where I go. I can't wait for warm weather so I can  sit in my gazebo with a Mint Julip!

04/07/2008 11:03 AM by Julie Kippen Vernal Utah Real Estate (Century 21 Dart Realty)

Sorry that should say I missed my flight this morning not more and I haven't even had a drink yet!

04/07/2008 11:05 AM by Julie Kippen Vernal Utah Real Estate (Century 21 Dart Realty)

Julie - hopefully you won't have to sit around the airport all day but I guess because you travel a lot you may be more used to it. Can't wait to see some of your pictures after your flowers explode with color!

04/07/2008 12:50 PM by Rich Dansereau Loan Officer Knoxville TN (Home America Mortgage)

I did end up sitting around the airport all day. I missed several flights by one seat and then got into Denver just late enough to miss my flight home to Idaho Falls. I spent my first night sleeping in the airport. It was an interesting experience. People were cleaning and it was very quiet. It was actually weird when people did start coming to the terminal and into my recently quiet world. I didn't get to go home. I went back to Vernal to work. I will have to get some pictures together soon. Hope to get home to my grandchild in a week or so. I see you were able to get the blog customizer to work. I got the snippet in the text box but nothing happened.

04/13/2008 11:05 AM by Julie Kippen Vernal Utah Real Estate (Century 21 Dart Realty)

Julie - Glad you made it home after quite the experience. Knock on wood, I have not had to sleep in an airport. I saw that Al Roker from the Today Show was broadcasting from Rupert, Idaho this morning! The key I found to making the customizer work is to be sure to choose colors for all the backgrounds and texts before trying to add header or background photos! I am looking forward to your photos!

04/14/2008 09:12 AM by Rich Dansereau Loan Officer Knoxville TN (Home America Mortgage)

The first time I didn't try the photos, just the colors. The second time I put in everything and nothing happened. Did you add the background and text colors, and then go back into the customizer to add the pictures? Some people say it changes the size of the page and makes it too narrow and some are saying that they can't change the photos after they put them in. I wouldn't want to choose a photo that didn't look right and then not be able to take it off.

04/14/2008 09:49 AM by Julie Kippen Vernal Utah Real Estate (Century 21 Dart Realty)

I see you have added to your sidebar. I tried to add something to my sidebar, but I couldn't figure out where to insert the code.

04/14/2008 09:50 AM by Julie Kippen Vernal Utah Real Estate (Century 21 Dart Realty)

Julie - There is a Version 2 for the customizer that came out today. It does allow you to change the photos you use at your discretion! I have been fooling around with mine today and changed the photos (size in the background and added a header photo)! You add the code for your sidebar widgets:

  1. Click My Home
  2. Click My Settings
  3. Add HTML (code) scripting to Blog Description Box - ALL Coding goes here!
  4. BIG HINT for ease of editing add <p> between each bit of coding you insert!

My mouth is watering for a mojito!  My absolute fav. drink!!

04/18/2008 11:53 PM by Cheryl Johnson (RE/MAX Preferred Associates)

Cheryl - Then go make you one or go somewhere and have someone make one for you!

04/19/2008 01:00 AM by Rich Dansereau Loan Officer Knoxville TN (Home America Mortgage)

Funny I just asked someone the other day what was in a mint julep, now I know.  But I've never had either one.

04/30/2008 10:27 PM by Cindy Bryant~Houston's Home Staging & Home Stagers By Redesign Etc.~RESA~ASHSR (Redesign Etc., Inc.-Texas)

Gin and tonic!  But seriously...I'd take either, although a mojito sounds right on the money about now.  Sweet and refreshing...nom nom.

Last time I had a mojito, I was creeping in the bushes on the side of my house, hiding behind a trash can and spying on my weird neighbors.  Now everytime I think of a mojito, I think about them and how they call the cops on each other!  Strange situation here in my eventful cul-de-sac... lol

Wow,

Mint Juleps are something we used to drink at the University of Georgia when I was in college.......I had forgotton about these....(I have fotgotton a lot about those years......proof that alcohol kills brain cells)

05/06/2008 07:42 PM by Julie Chapman Realty Homes Brunswick Georgia

Julie - A selective death of brain cells, I hope! <<<smile>>>
