Did Your Wall Charger or Power Supply Conk Out ? Here's Good Advice !

By

I had a wall charger cable snap on me. I drove around town for a while checking out the prices on various power supplies and wall chargers for my trusty little notebook. You know, I made the usual geek palaces, Best Buy, Office Max, Office Depot, Target, Walmart, K-Mart, the various hobby electronic parts dealers around Memphis.

Much to my disbelief, a replacement wall charger / power supply for a notebook computer could not be found for under 90 dollars, anywhere, with some as much as 200 dollars. Sheeesh !!!! For an 18.5 volt dc power supply ? Arrrgghhh !!!! No way.

I put my thinking cap on and thought for a second....wall chargers

Who has the greatest collection of junk and recycled electronic parts in town.....???

None other than the old Goodwill stores, the Salvation Army Thrift shops, the Disabled American Veterans Thrift Outlets, the second hand stores.

Sure enough, in a dusty little old thrift shop on Wells Station Road, called Second Time Around, in a neat old neighborhood here in my beloved River City, home of Elvis, I found my 18.5 volt power supply....for 2 dollars. I bought two of them.

So the next time you need a power supply or a wall charger go to the thrift store.

You'll be doing something good to help a needy family,

and they'll be doing something for you, too.

You'll save your computer and save yourself lots of

heartache, headache, and money, as well.

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) prices are derisory, Praful.

As long as the amperage, voltage and polarity of the thrift store power supply equal the requirements of your device everything is roses !

Here's an example. Your power supply, of course, may be different:

Why not, Kathy ? And this time of year, especially, when giving is so important. Thanks for the note.

That was really terrific thinking on YOUR part! I think next time I am around one of those stores, I will look to see if they have a spare for my phone and tablet. Thanks!

You'll be glad you did, Carla. And maybe even find that picture frame or jewelry box you've always wanted at a give-away bargain price I find great deals on sheet music, being a musician, too.

Thanks, Richie. I fill up a donation box here and there for them, too. It's a great thing to do. And even more so this time of year. Lot's of children need warm clothing, jackets and coats, and adults, too. Hope you're doing great.

Thanks David, in the past I have done a lot of digging through my drawers full of old electronics searching for the right polarity, amps and voltage, generally I find something but not always. and when that does not work there is always ebay.

Good to know of another cheap supply store.

Matching the correct polarity, voltage and amperage is safe, too, Bob. The host device could overheat resulting in an electrical fire or permanent damage if it isn't paired accordingly. Thanks for stopping by.

You know, I honestly forget to stop by Salvation Army, Goodwill, etc when I'm shopping. Some people over look these stores, either because they feel embarrassed or the fact that they feel the quality of the items sold might be used up or just bad quality. I use to feel that I wouldn't find anything of my interest in thrift shops. We need to stop overlooking Thrift stores because I'm aware that you can come across one of a kind items and save tons of money!

I found a stamp collection in two binders in a thrift store, Kim and Kristine, and paid 10 bucks for it. The catalog value was over 20 thousand dollars.

What an excellent suggestion. I would never have thought of it. And at that price I would have bought a couple of "back ups" myself.
