I'm Frightened To Think That People Could Support These Comments

By
Home Stager with Sharon Tara Transformations

This morning before I got out of bed I was scrolling through facebook on my phone. I came across a video shared by a friend.  The video is of Ben Stein calling President Obama racist and the reactions of the women of The View to Ben's comment.

The group sharing this video centered in on Rosie O'Donnell's reaction....captioning the video with this:

Watch the video if you want.....but the video is not what drove me to write this post.

I don't want to discuss Ben or Rosie or either of their opinions here.

It's the comments on facebook that are most disturbing to me.  So disturbing that I was brought to tears.

There are over 6700 comments.  Obviously I did not read them all.  I read more than enough though.   Here is a very small sample:

So cruel.  So attacking.  So much hate.

In their attempt to label Rosie as a hater, their comments instead make them look like the biggest haters of all.

The comments sicken me, and they deeply sadden me.

It really scares me how divided we have become.  What happened to having different political views and being able to discuss them rationally?  It's becoming too common for conversations to turn to attacks.  It's RED or BLUE and nothing in between.  It's far too easy to rally together a mob scene these days using social media and both parties are guilty of it.

13,290 people have LIKED this facebook post and 2016 people have SHARED it.  I wonder how many have read the comments and I'm frightened by how many actually support them.

Hi Sharon.  Why can't we disagree without being disagreeable?

Sharon, I could have written this as I feel the same. It’s one thing to feel hate but another to spread it. People jump on the bandwagon without thinking how they feel or join in to be part of the group. It is so sad … I can’t let myself go there.

This is why I stay off of FB for the most part besides business and a couple funny things that pop in my head that I want to share. It's just too disappointing to see what our society has become.

It's not only social media but talk show hosts, news outlets etc. who take no responsibility and share stories that make of fun of people and the next day they talk about how people shouldn't bully anyone.

Mimi:  "keyboard courage" was a new one for me too.  Great expression.  Some of these people I'm afraid would be just as obnoxious in person, I bet.

Michael:  Whether we are in midst of an election or not there are still those on facebook and twitter that push their agenda and their politcal views non-stop.  It's getting pretty old for me.

Sally & David:  Rude and beyond is getting more and more common.  It's very upsetting to me.

James:  That's the problem....it's probably only going to get worse.  People have much shorter fuses than they used to.

Conrad:  Well, some of us can.  It's these others I've quoted that need to learn restraint and common courtesy.

Kathleen:  I know I get very emotionally charged when I read some of the political propaganda out there and see people so quick to spread it around....I will even be honest to say I feel hate sometimes.  As you said though, I can't go there when it comes to joining the mob scene to attack someone else.

Suzanne O:  What's most disappointing for me is when I see something written or shared by someone I like and it's something that changes my opinion of the person in some way in a negative light.  Hate it when that happens!

Suzanne C:  So true.  Although I do enjoy when comedians poke fun at politicians or other celebrities.  I am slightly evil and dark when it comes to that, LOL.

I understand and wanted to say thank you for having the courage to write this post. I've not been a big fan of FaceBook and I deactivated my account. It's not what I thought it would be and it doesn't service my needs. I've turned it off with no regrets.

Patricia:  Some of the activity on facebook is annoying or offensive to me.  But, for the most part I find it very enjoyable.  I have cousins across country that I haven't seen since we were children and I'm able to keep in touch with them.  My parents are in Florida for the winter and miss my grandbabies and they look forward to my pictures and things I share about the kids. It's a great way to stay in touch with family and friends.  It's the political crap like this that I don't need to see.

Good morning Sharon,

I too share your dismay and am sicken how many use Facebook as a platform to spew their venom! Bill's phrase "keyboard courage" is a good one and I've never heard that one used but sums the attacks up perfectly! Thanks for writing this post, needed to be said.

Dorie:  I hadn't heard the "keyboard courage" description either...I really like it. I'm happy to see the support for the post, I did hesitate to write it.  I'm glad I shared it.

Sharon:

This is a great post. We can disagree on issues in American and remain loving and respectful. Rosie does enough damage to Rosie and does not need added commentary from anyone. I choose to pray for her, I know she is one of God's kids, she just needs to get to know Him better.

Sad to that we are a very divided Country today . . . .  It will be up to each of us to make a difference and close the gap one person at a time and use the power of the vote for change.

Good luck and success.

Aloha Sharon,

You have touched on a most repulsive side effect of social media and the OP-ED programming found on several "News" channels that claim their thinly veiled racism, sexism, homophobia, and whatever antisocial "ism" one can think of is valid journalism. There is a list of players who have exacerbating this situation through their "programming" paid for by those who desire power at the expense of the ignorant and poorly educated. Angry people are easy to manipulate.

These defective minds that produce this misanthropic ranting is a by product of media brainwashing and deliberate propaganda via the internet and media. Weak minds can only project their own bigoted selves and cannot even begin to rationalize their hatred. To a healthy well adjusted, rational person, this behavior is insanity. To those afflicted with this mental disease it is "justified".

I would suggest turning off your computer and cell phone and go out for a walk with a loved one, there is nothing on social media that substitutes living in the moment in the beautiful world around us.

Peace and Aloha No!

Lou:  I feel it will take a revolution of sorts to get us back to where we need to be.  We have gotten so far off track.

Kimo:  Well said....I agree with you.  Money and power are the driving force today, not what's best for us the people.  I'm going to go take that walk and spend some time on the phone with my mom while I walk.  It will be good for both of us!  Thank you!

I like that term "keyboard courage" becuase that is what it is. Many would not speak those words to another. It is a shame the media gives them time to share their hate which then incites the masses and brings out the comments.  Living in Nh we are sheltered but also over all treat people with respect and are very welcoming to new comers. Hope is shattered when the top politcians act like kings and queens.

Scott:  Inciting the masses is far too easy to do these days, and some people are just too good at it.
