What does Facebook mean to you?

What does Facebook mean to you? I saw an advice column the other day where someone was complaining because all that one of their friends posted to Facebook was vacation pictures. It made him think that they did not work often and that they did not need the money generated from working. That gave me pause. It got me thinking about how and why I use Facebook.

Facebook means many things to me. It is a way to share with distant relatives. It is a away to share pictures.  It is a way to reconnect with friends that I may have lost touch with over the years. It is a way to share information. It is a way to advertise my referral dependent business. It is a way to share information about real estate with potential clients and with colleagues. It is a way to plan events. It is a way to pass information. In short, it has become an integral part of both my personal and professional lives.

If you are watching what I post and judging me for my travels (or anything else for that matter), what you might not know is that my parents, who are older, have moved away, but they have learned how to check Facebook. You might not know that my kids put their pictures on-line and share them that way with me and they want me to do the same. I have relatives and friends who live out of the country and this is our main way of day-to-day communications.

Yes, people over-share on Facebook. There are some people that I have opted to stop seeing their posts because they were too frequent/negative/inappropriate/personal.

After reading that advice column, I am more aware of how my sharing appears to my friends and colleagues. I doubt I will change what I share, but I will be conscious of how it appears and maybe adjust it accordingly.

How about you? Have you embraced Facebook? What are your thoughts about how people use it.

I use Facebook to keep up with my family, which is scattered from Florida to California.   There is no better way to keep up with the births, marriages, and deaths of cousins and distant cousins and friends from long ago.

Business?  Not anymore.  Unless you pay for advertising, you will be lucky if 2% of your Likes and Friends ever see your posts.

As for politics and religion - sure, we conservatives won and won big the other day.  I put up a post or two.  But I'm not going to spam my friends with a never-ending stream of shares and posts.

I'm not using really using FB for business. Although, I do have a business page. I don't post hardly at all. However, we have kids and grandkids out of state and we regularly look to FB to see what's going on in their lives. It keeps us connected.

I have a personal page and a business page.  On my personal page is photos of my kids, my cats, and other happenings in my daily life.  A rare and vague post about a new listing or showing homes thrown in.  My business page is all about the area, what is going on, my listings, real estate and other interesting local topics to get people reading and talking.  I have over-sharers on my personal page but I can hide their posts.  It works for me.  It keeps me top of mind and I can attribute quite a bit of business to being on Facebook.  Thank you for the thought provoking post!

For me, it's mostly an evil addiction to a stupid game.  It also is a way to keep up with a brother living in China and other family members.  But I don't really use it as a business tool.

I have actually gotten business from friends on Facebook. I use a business page, and sometimes (but not often) share listing info on my own page. I have used my personal page to ask people to support my business page and have been able to drive up my 'likes' by doing that.  I have my company and the fact that I am a Realtor listed on my personal page under information. You never know who is looking (both good and bad) and why. Keeping that in mind, I find that FB is one of the most consistently used communication tools for my peers. If I get an occasional client because they know what I do for a living, who am I to complain ?
