I have recently taken 3 classes of continuing ed and have really enjoyed the experience.  Where as in the past I have taken online courses to get the required hours to renew my license, this time around I decided to go back to the classroom.  In my humble opinion the online classes are mind numbingly boring, the choice of courses are limited and I must admit most of it I usually forget. If you get a really good speaker it can be not only amusing, informative (isn't that the purpose)? and inspiring. I could not wait for the classes to end so I could implement the new things I had learned.

Now I would certainly agree some instructors can be irritatingly smug, talk only about how wonderful their own career was and in some cases down right condescending. But for the most part, most instructors are darn good.

There is one more thing, for those students that feel that the class is all about them and keep putting their hand in the air to relay some personal experience, please don't. It wastes everyones time and interrupts the flow of the instructor. I mean please ask yourself what value your input is adding to what is supposed to be a learning experience, and remember, our time is valuable.

Finally I highly recommend taking a Steve Harney class if the opportunity should come your way. He is a national speaker and totally inspiring. So get out there and enjoy your continuing ed. It's a powerful rejuvenation if your feeling a little jaded.

4 Comments on Continuing Ed classes can boost your moral

I just got on AR after doing my last continuing ed class today.  Don't you just hate that one person who probably should go back to the very first class they ever took?  They just never shut up! There is one in every class.

I swear, this one girl just HAD to keep talking to the teacher.  Of course she was in the first row.....  And the teacher finally started saying he had to get on with the class.  Otherwise the teacher was very funny and that always helps keep you awake!

Funny you should say that, they do sit in the front don't they, that way they can forget about the other people in the room....hmmmm

I also appreciate a good continuing education class. They are so inspiring. The best time to take them is when you feel like you've just about had it - they will certainly get you back into the groove.

Allison,

Thanks for sharing and you have a great point regarding classroom CE.  We are fortunate in the Northeast Georgia Board to have a very active education committee providing a good number of CE classes on a lot of subjects.  Classroom education does at times cover topics that aren't always exciting and instructors vary in the method of teaching but with a positive attitude and a desire to take something away from training sessions I have found that they have not only increased my bottom line, but have certainly made me a better professional in the real estate field.  We in our board are also fortunate to have had GRI available at the local level at Brasstown Valley Resort which allowed many of our members to attend as commuters thereby keeping their expense for the courses easier to handle in this slower market.

Thanks again for your point of view.
