Craving a Different Kind of Buzz

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Grants Pass, OR 199909023

There's a new buzz on the streets of Oregon The voters have spoken and we're now a state that allows the recreational use of pot.   Whether you agree with the people of Oregon or not, this day seemed inevitable.

While I respect the medical benefits of the plant, I'm not a toker and never have been.  I've always craved a different kind of buzz... a natural high.  My life is powered by joy that comes from within (although some say I've inhaled a little too much pixie dust).

I will never knock another's lifestyle, particularly if their choices involve measures that must be taken for health reasons.  I've seen too many friends and family members suffer from incurable disease.  I don't judge.

There's uncertainty how the new law will affect buying and selling real estate with 'grow' sites.  Education will be key in the coming days for REALTORS, property owners, tenants and consumers in understanding their rights.  In the meantime, I'll just keep on spewing my straight talk with real joy... minus that 'other' buzz =)

Mel- I'm like you... personally, I'd rather get my high from life!  You raise an interesting question, though, for agents.

Hi Mel,

I am with you on the subject, high on life even when it is challenging...I have heard that since loans are federally regulated and the feds have not approved marijuana, a property that is growing marijuana can be a problem to fund...this is what I was told.  I grew up in a country where I could have bought drugs and spirits at any age...the problems that we fear are not there...LOL  A

Hopefully, Colorado agents will weigh in on this subject. It will be interesting to see what happens to housing as a result of this change.

I hear ya Kathy!  Oregon was already a 'medical' marijuana state, which is tricky all by itself when interpreting 'Fair Housing' rules.

Interesting Alexandra... I hadn't heard that, but it makes sense.  More questions down the road about grow sites producing more than just a crop... we shall see.  P.S.  I'm with you... I don't subscribe to fear-based anything ;-)

At least Oregon doesn't have to reinvent the wagon wheel... other states like Colorado and Washington have already blazed the Pacific Northwest trail Tammie!

Melinda: I have an extremely high degree of concern about the environmental effect of the cultivation of weed, It has polluted California forest lands and affected the ecosystem. Now, perhaps every opportunist will be searching for a place to grow large quantities in Oregon, and even Alaska.

Mel,

We only missed by 2% of passing it in Florida this time around and I for one agree with you.  I think the uncertainty of what the changes will bring and the discrepencies between the federal laws and the state laws leave a wide margin for issues still to be determined.

Well I was thinking that if the grow sites are not IN a house it should be okay. I guess we will all find out together.

American prisons are filled with people who smoked some dried leaves.  That is not right.  I am all for legalization.

Having said that, I will pass on using it.  Smoking weed destroys ambition and leaves you feeling useless (they call it "stoned" for a reason).

It is such a rediculous notion, is the world not drugged to death as we witness what is going on.

As far as the above comment about being drugged, we're trying to hard to be something where not I think.

Mel, As we have seen from other states that legalized pot … it does impact real estate.  Those of us who are not toking the line … will continue to buzz along on a natural high. I’ll take pixie dust any day!

Me too... Rob!  As long as our actions don't hurt others... or their 'real' property.

I share the same concerns... Norm!  Living in one of the most eco-friendly states in the Union... I'm certain the powers that be are chatting about the same things over their morning cup of Joe.

It's just a matter of time before each state will be faced with the same decision.  And you're right... the Feds have one way of thinking on the subject and the States have another.  This is going to be a buzz discussion in the coming days, months and years... Kevin!

Wish it were that simple Sussie... but as you know, buyers are curious about the 'goings on' in neighborhoods and they don't want things like this affecting their resale.  It's a valid concern.

LOL... Fred!

Not sure which side of the fence you're on... Winston.  But yes... there are plenty of drugs to medicate oneself... legal and otherwise.

I think I'm guilty of all those pleasures... Laura ;-)

LOL... Kathleen!  It's a buzz-filled topic that will continue to roll industry heads ;-)

MMJ and RMJ has literally done wonders for our economy here in CO. Unemployment and homelessness rates are way down, folks are finding a new industry in which to grow their skills (pun intended), and real estate (especially commercial) has gone through the roof. The tax dollars earned have gone to benefit the expansion of our schools and the money just keeps flowing in. I took a weekend seminar regarding the laws and how they effect our state and was just in awe at the possibilities being provided to us from this industry. Out here you CAN grow in a home, for personal use only, but, lots of consumers need help figuring out HOW to do that without destroying their property. (ventilation, ampage, ceiling height, etc.). Whether anyone choose to partake or note, the fact is that this is the coming of a new time. There is lots to learn and now is a great time to branch out and explore the knowledge available. Those "in the know" will be considered a top resource for those "in the search". I only wish I had grabbed some commercial space before the change so that I could rent it for top dollar now!

That's quite an endorsement... Erin!  Thank you!  I think many of us are hopeful that the new dawn/new day will have a positive effect on our communities (as it has in Colorado).  There's certainly the education piece that needs to take place in order to squelch fear of the unknown.  I'm happy to hear it's working beautifully in your state!

I'm a believer in having it legal, and think it's safer having people smoking pot than drinking.  I'm concerned about it's health risk though for the users.  I read somewhere it was worse for your lungs than cigarettes.
