old-arnold-schwarzenegger“Best (& Worst) Beach Bodies of the Year”. That was the headline that grabbed my attention a while back as I stood in line at the grocery store.  And it wasn't for the most obvious reason that a 30-something year old man might be tempted to take a peek. In contrast, this was much less of a temptation and much more like the experience of approaching road kill on the side of the interstate. You know you’ll regret looking at it, but as the mangled creature moves closer, you just can’t seem to keep your eyes off of it.

Undoubtedly part of “the worst” category, the beach body being burned into my retina was none other than the Governator himself, Mr. Arnold Schwarzenegger. The object of my disgust was standing there proudly in his Speedo, the magnificence of his former self but a mere memory. The former Mr. Olympia, 7-time world champion, and star of countless action movies, now looked as if he had never stepped foot in a gym in his entire life. A man who once boasted an incredibly low amount of body fat now looked as if he had traded bicep curls for cheese curls, and leg squats for tater tots. To put it bluntly, he was a lot less buffed up and a lot more A.Y.C.E. “buffet-ed” up.

I must admit that I was extremely saddened by the image on the magazine cover. I try to hit the gym about 2-3 times a week, or at the very least throw up a few push ups and sit-ups each morning as I get ready for the day. I had always hoped that one day I would get my body sculpted the way I liked it and then I could just lay back a little, take it easy, and coast into my latter years with a body that at the very least didn’t repulse my wife. However, in one fleeting moment at the grocery store check out line, my dream was effectively terminated. Arnold has indeed proven that regardless of your level of achievement, even if you’ve reached the pinnacle of success in your sport or industry, you can’t let up for even a moment…or you will lose it all. The fall to the bottom is certainly a lot faster than the climb to the top and in business, as inLottery-Mega-Millions exercise, the moment at which you stop giving it your all is the moment that you will certainly fail.

One of the biggest differences that I see between the “haves” and the “have-nots” is in their view of success. Poor or unsuccessful people are always waiting for some once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, a strike of lightning, the invention of the century. They think that prosperity and wealth are achieved by winning some kind of “success lottery” and they’re always sitting around waiting to hit the lucky numbers. However, those that achieve greatness in life are those who understand that success is a process, not an event, and they commit themselves to that process until it produces their desired result.

I'm committed to the process.  How about you?  Let me know in the comment section below! And then write this on your mirror so it’s one of the first things you see every morning...“Success is a Journey, Not an Event!” Once that sinks into your mind and heart, you will be that much closer to achieving the life of your dreams.

Matt, there is no let up in our business. Once we sit back and feel we do not have to do anything to continue the flow of business, the business will flow right past us.

A truism indeed, Ed!  As they say, nothing fails like success.  So many Realtors and investors start their lead generation, and then stop it as soon as they get "too busy" handling all those leads.  It's not until a few months later that they see the negative consequences from taking their hand off the pump.....

One of my favorite quotes is from Desiderata "gracefully surrendering the things of youth". When I first read this, I was in my 30s and I thought "no way!" Now, at 60, I feel a bit different. Yes, I'm still on a quest to maintain my health, keep a healthy weight and enjoy a robust business but I'm no longer obsessed with a size 4 frame, being the top producer or running a marathon. Success is a journey, but the journey changes during different stages of your life.

The reality is that it is a bitch getting older. Arnold is a perfect example. Yes I play Powerball. I will always take a $2.00 shot at $40,000,000 or more. Success certainly is a journey just depends on how bumpy the ride is.

1.  That doesn't look like a Speedo to me.

2.  For a man of 67, I think he looks pretty good.  He doesn't have the "BELLY" sported by many men of his age.

It appears that much of the flesh is former muscle, of which he had and still has an abundance.

No problem with good ole Arnold today isn't his physique.  It's the fact that he's a letch.

I saw that same photo & an 'ewww' flew out of my mouth. For his age & past condition, I'm with you he's been lovin' the cheese curls. (I think Lenn has the hots for him).

Anyway, sometimes we hide under a rock on our journey for bits of rest lol.

Lenn, very keen eye indeed...calling me out about the speedo.  You sound like a woman who knows her speedos. :-)  I couldn't find the picture that was actually on the magazine, so another one had to be chosen.  Sorry for the inaccuracy, but I can always count on you to keep us all on our toes.

And Lyn, yes indeed an "ewww" is certainly in order.  But as I age, I understand I'm becoming a little more "ewww" each day, unless I work very hard at exercising and eating right.  It's just a good reminder to us all to keep our eye on the ball, in business and in health. :-)

Yes, that is also my opinion. You have to work constantly for your success but when you read some posts in facebook success and money will fall from the sky and you never have to work again.

Sunny greeting from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

I'm still laughing at the thought that Lenn Harley is a woman who knows her speedos. OMG!! ROTF. But I have to agree with Lenn, he looks pretty darn good for his age sonny! :)

And while I appreciate your larger point....it's sad that a 30-something considers an older body with disgust, sigh.

While I will not debate his body vs age...lol....I will say the comparison of letting off the gas is well taken.

I don't know what to think about this post.

I am a woman that lost over one hundred pounds about 25 years ago. I did it the old fashioned way....portion control and exercise. I have not had surgery to tighten or cut away some of the excess skin that is inevitable with that type of weight loss.  I am at the gym at least five days a week.

The thought that someone may judge me by my flabby thighs as someone who has given up or is lazy, makes me nauseous.

I will say that the man is 67 years old and I see more muscle in his upper arms than men half his age and Matt, I sincerly hope that you fare as well as Arnold as you age.

Matt--I can see that you had better keep up the workouts, especially with a business named P.I.G.!  And I agree with Lenn--I find the hanging low belly of men my age very sad!

Georgie, great point.  Trust me, after being diagnosed with arthritis in my neck at age 27, I'm all too familiar with the affects of time...even at the tender age of 36 now.  And it seems like most people who READ the entire article agree with my premise and get the point of the article, and those who just SKIM the article just take offense at my comments about poor Arnold.  Maybe Arnold's not the best example, because age has just as much affect on him as lack of training, but he was the shocking body on the magazine.  However, we all need to stay focused and committed, or we can lose very quickly what we worked so hard to achieve.

Carolyn, so true!  PIG is an acronym for Professional Investors Guild, but obviously the logo shows you it was also an intentional play on words with the phrase proud capitalist.  But hey, if it also reminds me daily to not become a "PIG" in my appearance, then all the better! :-)  Thanks for stopping by, and leaving a comment...

Dear Matt,

I am with Lenn. Mr Schwarzenegger's looks are a lot less objectionable than his character. If you can manage to remain a person of integrity into your old age, you will have to rely on your looks a lot less, because you will keep your friends from today around until then. I have friends, who were not able to maintain their looks due to accidents or illness. I love them no less, because they are beautiful inside.

Sad but true Matt Robinson none of this are getting out of this alive. I've resigned myself to the declining state at 69 years old. But I'm giving it Hell and going out in the style of which I have grown accostumed during the 70 year run I've been blessed with.

I've been a lifetime member of 24hr Fittness, which was at one time Family Fitness Center and before that another name affiliated with Vic Tanny some how. In fact I'm one of the few remaining lifetime members whose monthly dues are only $15/mth.

But given that I haven't been in a gym since I broke my femur surfing 3 years ago. I grew up surfing since I was 8 years old. Had a 15 year leave of absence while I raised 5 children. But when my youngest son headed off for college I hit the ground running and haven't looked back since.

When my number's up I want my ashes scattered over my favorite surf spot, Cardiff Reed in North San Diego and I'm hoping my surfing family and a few of my life long surfing buds will do a very modest paddle out on my behalf and then have a beach party afterwords. Sorry no crying not allowed.

John DL Arendsen, AWESOME comment!  You are an incredible inspiration...and I love that you are kicking butt all the way to the end!  I'm also in the middle of raising 5 kids, and I hope to get back into my high school/college love one day, pole vaulting.  Certainly another sport that doesn't lend itself well to old people (LOL), but I did it a few years ago at age 31 and won the Southeastern US Masters meet.  Granted, since 30 is the beginning of "Masters", I was the youngest guy there, but I still had a blast! Thanks for stopping by and lending your wisdom to out conversation.  :-)
