Essentials to Carry in your Vehicle - For Mobile Notaries and Realtors

The Notary Signing Agent Section of the NNA posted an article today with tips Signing Agents should do in between appointments. I think some of these are really good - especially for women who travel alone at night.  I think a lot of them go without saying, but here they are:

"Signing Agents should always make sure their vehicle contains the following essentials:

  • A full tank of gas. No Signing Agent wants to tell a lender they missed an assignment because they ran out of fuel on the way.
  • An inflated spare tire and tools to change a tire. It is never good to get a flat tire, and then find out you can't fix it because you forgot your tools or because the spare has no air.
  • A flashlight, map of your travel route, and first aid kit. If you become lost or have a mishap on the way to a night assignment, a flashlight, map and emergency kit can come in very handy.
  • A portable charger for a mobile phone. A Signing Agent's mobile phone is critical for timely communication with signers and lenders. It is important to be sure that the phone does not run out of power in transit."

Additional items suggested by myself and other AR members:

  • A golf club in my trunk large heavy steel 24" "multi-purpose" flashlight in briefcase and/or car trunk
  • Pepper spray in purse and in car door of vehicle
  • Quick start battery jumper and air compressor
  • Extra water, power bars, a blanket, extra lightweight jacket, and tennis shoes
  • Extra pair of comfortable dress shoes - just in case the ones you may have been wearing all day get uncomfortable (live and learn!)

I also think these tips would be helpful for realtors too.

10 Comments on Essentials to Carry in your Vehicle - For Mobile Notaries and Realtors

Denise, I'd say that these tips would benefit everyone.  I usually have water in my trunk but you've reminded me that I've got to change it out.

When parched in the desert I'm sure even the old water would taste good but because of your post, now I'll have newer water.

If only I was able to carry around a notary! :)

Ah, the dreaded flat spare tire-didn't know it was flat until after I put it on the car! But I need to ask about the golf club in the trunk? Is that because you never know when you will have extra time to hit a few balls or for defense? If it is for defense I can't imagine a bad person waiting for you to get out and open your trunk!

I carry one of those large flashlights in my car, the kind that are 24" long, take 5 batteries, and made of steel. Those are the ultimate multi-purpose device, and are disguised as a useful flashlight so I carry it on appointments.

Good advice and it would also apply to REALTORS®. I would also be beneficial to tell someone where you are going. I also carry one of those Quick Start battery jumpers in case the battery goes dead.

Thanks, Good Post!

I had learned the hard way...I now carry a quick start battery jumper and air compressor.  I also carry blankets and flash lights as well....I had my fair share of being stuck on a dark cold road...I am happy to say I always managed to get those loans closed. Great Blog!

I think the extra items you add could be quite beneficial.

I have the battery charger for the cell phone and one for the car battery. I also carry a flashlight.

But, I live in southern  CA and I can't deal with any more problems than this. Yes, I am a whoose...........

and this is the reason I live here.  If it rains more than 2 days in a row we all get depressed. LOL

Cheers

I appreciate all the comments and added suggestions. I have now changed/added a few things to my list.  I forgot to put the blanket in there, which I carry in my trunk.

The quick start battery jumper/charger and air compressors are great ideas too.  Thanks Pamela and Michael!

And Dennis... I was cracking up at your response and have changed the golf club to "a big flashlight" which is a much better "multi-purpose" idea.  So funny... in case I "have extra time to hit a few balls."  LOL  I've never played golf in my life and don't even know where I got the golf club or how I'd be able to pull it out fast enough in the event someone were to come up behind me when geting out my briefcase from the trunk on appointments.

Thanks everyone!

A couple of days ago my battery died on me but I had bought a battery charger.  This creature isn't something that  I understand  but it got the battery started.    YES!

I struggled to get it charged when I bought it a few months ago.  I think it is something that any man and probaly most women would understand but I have trouble putting air in my tires.

My battery is fine, I had it tested, but there might be a loose cable or whatever and no one knows.  At least I know this little treasure will do the trick if the battery acts up again.

Great advice for anyone travelling for work or pleasure.

Also, if you have any medical conditions, get a Medic Alert bracelet of necklace. I thought it was ugly to wear but I keep it under my blouse and it has a contact persons phone number. I keep that person up todate with my meds and conditions via fax. If she ever gets a call she has the paper in her purse.

Also, carry a list of these medications (and extras in labelled containers).

All great things to have in your car.  A gps is also a good idea.  Always have change in your car for parking meters or tolls.  I learned a valuable lesson in Santa Fe last month.  I had no change for the meter and late for the appointment.  So cost me 16.00 and an hour trying to find the place to pay.  Those places are always a pain to park around or even to find.  Another reason for gps.  Happy Signings to all!
