Public meeting on multi-family housing in Auburn set for Monday
Auburn City Council members will be on hand for a public meeting to discuss multi-family housing in the city at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Auburn Chamber of Commerce building.
The meeting comes after Mayor Bill Ham Jr. brought up the possibility of a moratorium on multi-family housing at the Nov. 4 City Council Committee of the Whole meeting.
“It’s important to note that no decisions have been made,” Ham said. “But I’ve heard concerns for many years from residents and property owners on both sides of this issue, and it’s time for the Auburn community to have a public discussion about multi-family housing.”
At the meeting, Ham voiced his concerns about new developments leaving vacancies in older units around the city, as well as the lack of substantial growth in student enrollment at Auburn University that would be able to fill those older units. The council also requested that a multi-family housing study that was completed in March 2013 be updated.
In the past year, the area has seen large multi-family housing projects spring up, including 160 Ross on Glenn Avenue between Ross and Debardeleben streets. Many Auburn residents have voiced concerns over the size, look and location of the large four-story student housing development, as well as the need for more multi-family units with vacancies at other apartment complexes in the area. The 160 Ross project is slated for completion by the summer of 2015.
The Auburn Chamber of Commerce is located at 714 East Glenn Avenue.
