Blowing Up My Email, Agents Please Be Judicial

Blowing up my emailMy email inbox fills up every day with dozens, sometimes hundreds of emails from agents that are marketing their listings to me. It makes no difference whether the agents know me or not, whether I have ever sold any of their listings or they have sold a listing of mine or even whether I work in their market area. They are sending to all the other agents in our MLS system and doing a mass email on every listing they have.

Remember It Goes to Our Smart Phones

Not only do we get them on our computers but most of us have our emails set to forward to our mobile offices, our smart phones. These types of emails are blowing up our emails and our phones.

No Decretion

These notifications are not only limited to their new listings but I get these emails by some agents every time each one of their properties has an open house, a price reduction, a change in terms or when they think it is time to remind me of their special properties. What is this accomplishing? Nothing.

Being Inundated

When a deluge of properties come in over and over again it makes me tune them all out. In fact I unsubscribe as fast as I can or delete. Others go into junk mail. With hundreds of agents working in my town and thousands in the Middle Tennessee, I cannot and do not want to know about each one of their properties by a special notification. That is what the MLS is for. All these eamils fill up my inbox and are a hassle to go through.

Helping or Hurting?

So how is this helping their properties? If they would pick very special properties and just send those I might look at their emails. But I sincerely doubt that any working agent has the time or desire to comb through dozens of emails from agents every day that are just promoting their properties.

Their "very special emails" quickly go to junk. Since they can't decide for themselves what is exceptional and what is not, I don't want to see any of them. How does this hurt them and me? It's like an agent crying "Wolf". I would like to know about an extremely good deal or a huge price drop or a change on a listing I have shown. But since I am ignoring those agents by the vast number of emails coming in, I am missing the good deals too.

Use Sparingly

Email Marketing Agent to Agent Should be Judicial and used sparingly. Thank goodness all 700 agents in my area are not using daily/weekly mass emails. The agents that send one every now and then, may get read. The agents I work with regularly may also get read. If they put a personal note with it in the subject line, I am almost certain to read it.

Blowing Up My Email, Agents Please Be Judicial

I have heard other agents in our Board say they dislike this too. So I say it is hurting all of us because we are tuning out the good ones because of the overuse. Be judicial agents, please. I know other agents feel this way too and it is the way I see it. Delete!

"Amen", I also unsubscribe to these daily emails..... it gets old fast.... can you imagine how clients feel when all those agents send them farming by email each week or once a month. Even regular mail is bad enough.

I also get them daily.  I have hit the unsubscribe button and it does no good.  What I have done for someone using it excessively is to indicate it as spam.  That usually does the trick.

Debbie, I don't really understand why agents do this.  Especially from far away areas where I do no business.  And, as for local agents, I belong to the MLS.  I can see their listings, price changes and open houses.  I don't need their property fliers.

Join and post it to Active Rain so the people that want to read it will.

And a story:

An agent whose email has been relegated to spam status, because of all the listing fliers she sends out, sent me an offer a few months ago.  I never saw it.  She never called to confirm receipt.  The home sold to another.  So, yes it can definitely hurt.

Debbie - We all understand the importance of email marketing but I try to limit it and instead send things through social media.  We have to remember when we give email how would we like to be receiving it.

I've felt your pain, Debbie. Our MLS got rid of that mass email option some years back and boy did it reduce the number of these emails!

I would say sometimes it could near 100 emails like this. Some companies sent every listing in separate emails. It drives me nuts and i want to just hit the spam button as i never signed up for this waste of time.

Hi Debbie: I don't send emails to agents to notify them of my new listings, open house or updates because I don't want to get these notifications either.

Most of the time it slows down my computer because the flyer is huge. I unsubscribe if I remember it and have a chance to do it. Otherwise, I hit delete.

Hi Debbie - great point and I too (I am sure we all do) get so many emails every day, but I have to be careful not to miss something important!!

I have one company which I have unsubscribed at least 5 times and now when I see their emails, all it does is completely annoy me.

This is a great topic for continued discussion. Many of these agents will have their email designated as spam and they will then wonder why there is no response to email that is actually related to transactions.

Debbie, I delete these everyday and don't read any of them. You become numb after awhile and it's definitely not helping sell the house.

And on the back-end, they'll tell their potential client in a listing appointment, "And I have a network of over 500 agents that I blast your listing too." And the potential client gets all impressed.  They get the listing, I get ANNOYED!

you never know what's important, you should have several email names,  the important email should only go to one name you can focus on, the rest you can read or delete as needed

Luckily, in my area, it's used sparingly, usually when there is something unusual with a listing. As to those out of the area, I just delete without reading. I just don't have the time to even figure out WHERE they are.

I just unsubscribe to their email list.  If that doesn't stop it I will call the office and tell them I unsubscribed and ask what their policy is on spam.

Debbie~ If the property is in the MLS and meets my client's needs it will come up in my search. I don't need the email. Email can be best used for coming soon properties.

Boy, isn't that the truth Debbie.  I finally found a way to go into our MLS system and "opt out" of these mass emails however some will still send them with every new listing and every open house, etc. so guess where there email address is now - blocked. Yep. I won't look at any of your emails now because you have "overdone" it. I agree.
