Tips to Stay Safe During the Holidays
We know we need to be extra careful about our personal safety and our homes during the holiday season. This time of year has more instances of robberies and personal attacks. Being mindful will help ward off trouble and we can enjoy a safer and happier holiday season.
Also, be alert in your offices. People have been known to enter offices under the pretense of doing business or getting directions when their real intention is to snatch a purse, steal money, steal checks or small electronic devices. Lock purses away and be attentive to strange behavior.
When Traveling:
- Ask a neighbor, friend or family member to go by and check on your house at different times of the day.
- This same neighbor can bring in your mail each day.
- Have your newspapers and mail held during your vacation if possible.
- Get an automatic timer for your lights at home. Have more than one so they are set to come on at different times.
- Do Not Post your travel plans on social media. Even sharing photos with friends while you are away can innocently be shared and become viral. Wait until you are home safely to post.
- Be discreet when telling your work associates as to travel plans. The fewer that know the better.
- Never, ever allow a receptionist to declare that you are out of town or leave a message like that on your phone.
When Shopping:
- Do not carry a lot of cash.
- Make sure a friend or family member know where you are going and check in often.
- Consider shopping during daylight hours when it is harder for thieves to hide their identity.
- Lock packages out of sight in your car.
- Shop with a friend or two.
- Park in well lit areas and have your keys and phone in hand when going from and to your car.
- Do not unlock you car door until you are at your car. Too much notice gives thieves time to meet you at the car.
- Stay alert and aware of your surroundings.
- Leave the mall and stores in groups or ask for a security person to walk you to your car or watch out for you.
-
Keep your wallet or your purse to the front of your body and as flat against your body as possible.
