Geothermal Heating and Cooling Systems  have been deemed...

"most energy efficient and environmentally sensitive of all space conditioning systems"   by the Environmental Protection Agency

This system takes advantage of the earth's constant temperature of approximately 55 degrees . Water or a water/antifreeze solution is circulated through a loop of polyethylene pipe buried in the ground or water. The process involves a cycle of evaporation, compression, condensation and expansion. Although the system does require some electricity, it gets 70 percent of the energy it uses from the Earth! They are more than 3 times more efficient than a conventional system.

The duct work is the same as a conventional hot air system, however, the difference in the air flowing from it is astounding.
With a conventional system, the air flowing from the registers is approximately 80 degrees.
With the Geo. system, the air flowing can be 110 degrees.

How does FREE hot water sound?
Warmth from the compressor, when used with a desuperheater can heat water in Summer at little to NO cost!
In the Winter the cost is still quite low.

-The Advantages-

* No use of fossil fuels
* A savings of 40- 70 percent in heating costs
* A savings of 30-50 percent in cooling costs      (compared to conventional systems)
* Free to low cost hot water
* Housed inside, reduced risk of exposure, wear and tear and vandalism
* Less chance of fire - no combustion
*No Carbon Monoxide risk
* No Flue
*Because of it's Energy Star Label, home owners can take advantage of tax benefits and possible lower mortgages and utility benefits

There are some draw backs with this system.....
*They cost more to install. .... but the cost is redeemed in just a few years of savings
* There is a lack of qualified contractors installing these units because they are so new.

The search for greener homes is on the rise. Energy efficiency is a much talked about subject. Saving money is harder to do and more important everyday. Protecting our environment is crucial. Consider Geothermal for your home!

Great post.  I am slowing getting my house green.  I would love to do solar and wind if I can.

Stephanie, Great points, GT is one great way to help break free of the petro-addiction. Probably one reason it get so little play. Thanks for the links also!

We're using a geothermal system in our newest project here in Chicago.  4 loops at 400' each.  If anyone is interested, we're actually able to run the loops through our caissons.
