This morning I was looking at the latest blog posts people have made about ActiveRain using bloglines, one the many blog searches out there, and saw this post by Greg Swann of Bloodhound Realty (by the way he has a pretty good blog).  In it he says on first investigation ActiveRain is "seemingly a toe-in-the-water experience for technologically-timid Realtors. My initial take, reported back to Jim, was this: "ActiveRain is the AOL of real estate weblogging...""

At first I was a little taken back being compared to AOL. They're the ones responsible for sending out millions of those CD's that were only good for microwaving and frisby, for "dumbing down the Internet" and of course that annoying "You've got mail" voice that will forever be etched into your mind.  But once I got over the initial part of it, I realized, he's right.  In a way that's what we're trying to do and we should take it as a complement that we are succeeding.

AOL was responsible for introducing countless non-technically savvy people to the online world.  This is in the same way we hope to help introduce many real estate professionals to blogging and open up a whole new world of real estate resources online.  We don't claim to be the best solution for everyone but we try to make it a solution that everyone can be part of.  Instead of building a solution full of features and customizability we're opting for ease of use and adoption.

While most of our initial user base has been significantly more technically savvy than your typical realtor, they are the ones that can see a clear benefit to what we're offering.  We've had many members that the network has been an eye opening experience as far as the benefits of blogging.  As they enjoy the successes with the network we hope that they will suggest ActiveRain to their peers as their first step to getting an online presence.

And we promise not to mail you any CDs...

No CD's, darn :P Being compared to AOL has other benefits. Look at their usership? And if the AR nework reached that potential, which it will, it would be a highly successful professional network. Pretty promising...AR ROCKS!!

P.S. ActiveRain's strategy "ease of use and adoption" reduces the the online clutter normally associated with networking companies which should provide a more reliable network.

Your approach is super.  I invited one of my colleagues yesterday who doesn't have her own web page yet.  Now she has a nice looking profile page on AR and an instant presence on the web.  We were chatting last night about the credibility that AR gives her in eyes of her clients.

Hi Matt, great post. I have had AOL for 10 years. Works for me, but then I have never tried anything else. I may be saying that about AR in 10 years. I love simple. If it works, I keep it. My time is to valuable to waste on complicated things. Thanks for the info.

On a high level I can see the comparison... I was one of those people that started on the internet via AOL. (And I was professional in a techonology based field at the time.)

I have been a member here for just short of 1 month... and I NEVER blogged... basically because I didn't get "it" and "it" offered.

But I do now! Because I started blogging here.

And because of this resource I have had over 1,800 hits on my website DIRECTLY related back to Active Rain.

Dude you is doing somethign WAY right.

Matt, I was hoping for the CD's.  They make wonderful wind chimes.

I think there is a basic design principle that many people don't understand: For a given process, the easier a system is made for the end user, the more complex the system must be internally. The reason AOL is shunned by the tech-savvy is the same reason the non-tech savvy are drawn to it: ease of use equals very little "tweaking" left for a geek to do. Geeks usually prefer a simple shell of a system that they can build upon and modify to suit there needs.

Matt,

I was one of those pioneers on aol in the early to mid 90's. Most of my friends didn't have computers yet. I remember 1 by 1 teaching my friends how to go online. Some of them have found their life partners on aol. I've since become more geeky myself but I've never given up my aol accounts. I'm suprised at their new free portal business plan. I would have happily paid them $14.95 the rest of my life. Branding? Loyalty?

NO CD's?  How about a top ten activerain cd for top 100 members? just an idea.

Compared to AOL is a very big compliment.  Everyone and their mother knows what AOL is or what they do.

Let it rain!

AOL is not a business address I would use   but had to keep it as so many of our customers use the program.  This format is very useful and in our industry much more informative than being captured by the aol version of the web.

As long as AR doesn't start charging to click out to the internet and doesn't start blocking e-mails that come in from outside, it's great to aspire to the recognition.  All of us have good and bad in us, so just assume the good parts of AOL in the comparison.
