A day in the class room and my take aways

By

My day was spent yesterday in learning about teaching.  Confused?  Yeah, me too from time to time.  But I got a lot out of by watching the people around me. Being new to the "real estate instructor" side of things I knew only what method of learning I have and been teaching by that style.  Perhaps that's not the best way. Yesterday I got to see demonstrations that I think will help me moving forward.

I certainly paid attention and took notes when people were speaking but throughout the day I would pull away from the "lesson" at hand for about a minute with each teacher and study the people around me that I could see to notice how engaged they were with the style being demonstrated. And folks, lecture is is NOT. There just HAS to be student engagment. It was a good day and I've got to get some lesson plans done for some CE classes.

I think the same thing should apply when we are working with buyers and sellers.  We have to share thoughts and communicate and get feedback from out clients. But that's another post for another day.  Right now I'm about to check out a wonderful Italian place and I'll let you know how that goes later.

And not everyone learns the same way! Some can read and learn and some need hands on, let me touch and feel, do it, and I can learn.

I have no doubt you would be/are a great teacher! Let me know when the classes are...I NEED an excuse to come to the lake!

Tammy, engaging conversation plus great information is an unbeatable combination! I totally agree the lecture approach is a no-win!

As a former trainer in a previous life, you are right now, adult learners had reading and lecture. They want to be engaged and learning and expect to leave learning something but you only have 10 minutes to "capture" them otherwise they check out.

The only way I can take anything away, typically, is if there is discussion and true engagement.  Otherwise, I can just read about it the topic online.  I don't learn as well by "listening" to someone lecture or talk TO me, I prefer it relate to real life in a way that makes me think rather than just makes me take notes and drink an excessive amount of caffeine.

I am totally a visual learner. Anytime someone that is teaching has the words up on the board or has pictures to describe what they're teaching I learn so much better.

Hi Tammy,  Everyone wants to be a part of something.  If they participate, the information is absorbed easier.  Nice blog.

"Lecture" only accomplishes one thing, it allows the teacher to get the class done.  It doesn't do much for the students, but if the teacher's only goal was to get the class done, then that's clearly immaterial.

Based on your work here at ActiveRain, I'd expect you'll be a very hands on teacher who foments discussion.

Best wishes Tammy on getting your students to engage and learn. You were chosen to teach because you have the skills it takes to teach. Confidence will get you through it; whether or not the student is engaged is hard to predict. I find that those who attend classes are there for a reason and those who would rather do online classes are different learners.

This will be a great challenge for you and I know you will get more out of it and those that want to learn will too.

Great teachers can make a real difference in the classroom. One of my least favorite classes for my GRI was only bearable because the instructor was entertaining.

Claude Labbe I'm a very involved broker too.   And I had some lecture professors in college and I didn't do well in those classes.  I don't find myself paying attention when people talk "at" me and not "to" me.

Larry Johnston thanks.  I'm looking forward to helping my agents learn more from CE than they have been getting.

Tammy, No doubt, many different preferred learning styles.  I do best reading and visually, no auditory.  And typically I'd rather just be given the content and allowed to go at my own pace.  Bill
