Fly Fishing in RI | Ty the Knot
With over 400 miles of true coastline, the smallest state in the Union, Rhode Island, has a hankering for tying the knot with fly fishing. RI Department of Environmental Management is hosting a low cost program where you can learn, make and discuss how salt water and fresh water flies are made and used.
With experienced fly fisherman who donate their time to further the art of fly fishing knot tying, Monday evenings through December 22nd 2014, you can join in. Located at the North Kingstown community center at 44 Beach Street in North Kingstown overlooking Narragansett Bay it is at a cost of $5 a session. What a deal!
Knowing very little about the art of fly fishing except what I see on the National Geographic channel and read in magazines, I always thought it would be something soothing to do. You have nature around you, the water and the fish plus we have this amazing RI coastline to enjoy. Just can not beat that in RI coastal real estate. Some people are lucky enough to do this fly fishing sport just minutes from their homes.
I learned that there are sinker flies and bobbler flies...really. This is the one I made the other evening at class that I hope some striper will enjoy when I use it. Oh yes, the rod and gear must come too...you really need to wade into the ocean, bay or river to make a catch. I look forward to the next class and you should too by contacting kimberly.sullivan@dem.ri.gov it is worth the time!
