Update: April 6th at 6:30pm - I just rolled out a new approach that makes it even easier to customize your ActiveRain blog - and it plays nice with all of AR's pages. Click here for details

Update: April 5th at 8:30am - As many of you may know, I recently discovered a way to totally redesign your ActiveRain blog. At 2:30AM I was contacted by Bob Stewart of ActiveRain asking me to remove this post. As a result, I have removed all of the styling that changed the look of this post (see screenshot below). In their defense, he raised a good point. There are pages on ActiveRain that shows a number of posts from different users. If multiple users have these "styled" blogs, it could cause a mess.

I will be speaking with him today and hope to work out a solution that will resolve that issue. I will keep you guys updated. I have attached a screenshot below so you can see what is possible with your ActiveRain blog. Please comment on this post to encourage AR to leave this flexibility in place!

You can see live examples here and here. I ask that you not implement this until I have a chance to speak with Bob from ActiveRain.

Below is the original post

Guess What. You are still on the ActiveRain website! Take a look at the address bar.

It turns out that ActiveRain gives you amazing flexibility in customizing your existing ActiveRain blog! It’s just that no one has taken advantage of it. Ready to customize your own ActiveRain blog? I thought you might, so I wrote a detailed tutorial on how you can do it (for free). I posted the tutorial on my Dakno Blog

Brad - SWEET Tip. I have added backgrounds to my posts in the past using HTML, but I never thought about using CSS. Great idea and tip. I am all over it.

Brad,  It definately is different thant what I am use to seeing.  I notices the member number and online counter is not in the upper right hand corner.  Is that normal or did you choose not to have them there?

So, can I swipe the CSS from my WP blog or my Joomla website?  It would be really nice if I didn't have to spend a year figuring something out...  Which means my A/R blog wouldn't change...

Brad, this may be a lot to ask but I am a bit challendged here.  I love the header in the CSS but the wording needs to be changed for me.  I figured where it is in the CSS and am wondering if you would share the background without the name of your blog so I can put the name of my blog in there.  I think I figured it all out.  This is my first trying CSS and got it all set up by following your tutorial - thanks SOOO much I love it (just need a header)

Brad - I LOVE this.  I tried playing with it but could not make it work.  I have a Ready, Fire, Aim grasp of code.  I was able to put your exact css code on my blog - it looked great but it had your blog name on it.  I was able to delete your name but could not get anything there in its place.  I wish I knew more about this.

Would it be possible to create a blank template with XXXXX's where the blog name or tagline go?

You are so generous to share all this info.

BTW - I was able to turn the entire thing bright yellow - you were right, it didn't look nice.  :)

I tried this as well but must have some code wrong. The back ground I tired to insert also showed up in the body of my blog, making it un-readable. Your body is still plain white - that didn't work for me. . . But, I'll keep playing... LOVE this idea!

OK - Here is my first attempt.  I'll have to play with it a bit more tomorrow.  I'd like to get my blog name up at the top and change the green to a more neutral color.  Too much fun, not enough time in the day.

Brad - do you have to post the code inside every blog you write? Mine looks good when I'm viewing the blog I just did but I can't see it when I view old blogs.  Did I do something wrong.  I left the blog in draft.

Gotta go to bed, it's late.  I'll try again tomorrow.  Thanks.

Update: When I looked at your old blogs I can't see the new look either.  This makes me thing that this is going to be something you have to do every time. ??

Is there a way to put this code in the sidebar part where you put widgets so it will be on every blog?

1:15am • #57

If you are on this thread, please do not do this yet. I repeat, do not try this.

It will cause a big problem in the portion of the blog tab where you can go 'view more posts' and it shows ten posts at a time. If you do this, it takes over that whole page and if more than one of you do it at the same time and your blogs show up on that page together, I don't know what will happen...........

This post is being put in draft until I have Matt take a look. Sorry.

Brad - Here is a screen shot of mine.  I was able to customize it but I couldn't figure out how to write stuff in it after.  I can't write in code so I tried to switch back to WYSIWYG and it got messed up.

I understand that we are not allowed to do this yet so I kept the blog in draft.  I'm eagerly looking forward to playing with this more.  I'll hold all the rest of my questions for when this is resolved.

Thanks for the update I was wondering what happened to it.  I did this already, should I remove until resolved.  I really love the change and hope we can do.  I can see however, that some of us are a bit challenged and either the tutorial needs a little tweeking.  Since the header is a JPG it is a problem inserting names of our blogs.  Will wait to the outcome.  Thank you Dakno for sharing this with us and good luck.

Excellent tutorial Brad... for those having trouble getting a grip on this concept, you can also take baby steps(change one thing at a time) and just play around with one small part of the code at a time to do things like...

- adjust the background color or...

- add a background image or...

- add a header(logo) like on Wordpress blogs

For an example, take a look at this week's marketing group week in review. You'll see I've added a logo along with some white space to let it "breath" at the top of the page.

I'll explain more about this later if and when Bob & co. give us the go ahead to do it.

Thx again Brad for sharing this excellent tutorial with the marketing group. It will be a nice change to see some hot blog pages instead of the generic stuff.

5:32pm • #67

Ok so we are anxiously awaiting the answer to whether this can be implemented or not.

Until then, one non tech question: can one just copy the code from their existing web page or other HTML design to bring it over creating a consistency of message?

Don't Cry.

Now is the time to re-educate clients. Thirty four states in 2007 had a drop in forclosures. Three states are distorting & throwing off the national curve (CA, FL, AR) The market is starting to stabalize. Now is the time to buy the investment property & get off the side lines.

Thanx.
