A few thoughts about Ferguson

I like this post. When Alan Kirkpatrick expressed his thoughts on Ferguson he said a mouthful.

"Many young people across America who need to know God has such high purpose for their lives. A "calling" if you will that once understood would help them rise above living for self, or surrendering to peer pressure".

I have read a number of posts leading up to and following the events in Ferguson Missouri. Just wanted to share a few thoughts.

1. This is such a tragic loss of life. Michael Brown represents, to me, many young people across America who need to know God has such high purpose for their lives. A "calling" if you will that once understood would help them rise above living for self, or surrendering to peer pressure.

2. I reject the assertion that a majority of "white" people are racist. It is unfair that white Americans are being forced to defend against an untruth. Racism exists in America and every race practices it, though I believe the numbers are small but too vocal. I was raised to accept every person, we are all a part of the human race. Racism is at work anytime we look at color and associate negative behaviors or stereotypes.

3. Undisciplined spending and politics has damaged our Police force image in America. When I was growing up in small towns in the state of Arizona, we knew our police officers by their first name. They were living out what was emblazoned on the side of their vehicles "To protect and serve". They had no ticket quotas. Their job was to be a community friend, to know the people they served and to protect them. Today politics and undisciplined spending is making our police force little more than "bill collectors" for the city. Many citizens feel the police are more a friends of government than friends of the community: speed traps, fine traps (looking for expired tags, emission's). Fines can be crippling to those struggling to make ends meet.

What if the police officer in Ferguson had known Michael Brown or Micheal Brown had known the police officer because of an event put together to introduce the police to the local schools.

I heard a story a few years ago of an elderly lady, alone, who was walking home. A couple of young men approached her demanding her purse. Without blinking she said to one of them "How is your mother doing? Tell her I said hello". The boys looked at each other, turned and ran off. The power of relationship is greater than we realize.

4. The riots and protests we have watched across America have been destructive to both the memory of Michael Brown and the dignity of the larger discussion in America. So many took advantage of the protest to steal, burn and damage property. My hope and prayer is that we can unite as a community around our points of agreement. Every Life is valuable and worthy of our highest efforts to serve and love into community.
