A Burrowing Owl, Not a Common Golf Course Sight

An Uncommon Golf Course Visitor

wild goats on ArubaEarlier this month while taking a brief vacation to Aruba, I was fortunate to capture an unusual photo on one of the holes at the Tierra Del Sol Golf course. Not the goats that roam along the fringes and are wild yet not uncommon to the island.

The goats travel in large herds and may be slightly protected, or just not worth hunting as we have never seen them on the menus of the local restaurants.

What I was surprised to see were burrowing owls along some of the sand traps.  As we were approaching one hole, my playing partner cautioned me to try and keep my ball away from a particular sand trap. Little did he know that I try to keep my ball away from any sand trap.

burrowing owls

He had experienced an aggressive critter that had come out and squawked loudly as he approached his errant shot.

As it peaked up from it's burrow it started to chirp. Evidently a warning to either us or the inhabitants of the nest.

Staking it's territory it got more anxious as I got closer with my camera.

Burrowing owl

The owl is very common to the area as I saw staked nests on several more holes. It could have been an active nest but we didn't stay around too long to find out.

When I next find myself on the island, I will take a curiousity walk along the golf course to see if the owls are back in the sand traps. I know I want no part of the traps so they are welcome to keep them to themselves.

A great shot of this Burrowing Owl, Ed.  We spotted a family of them while walking down a dirt arroyo.  We watched for a couple of weeks then little thugs killed the birds.  Killed them and left them laying about for no reason at all.  Karma is all I can say.

Ed-- That's a great shot! I would definitely have been in trouble there since my golf balls take direct flight to sand traps and water.

Ed, You managed to get some great photos of the owl.  It seems they managed to find a great place yet not without a lot of disruption. They are kept extra busy protecting their territory.

Excellent imagery you brought back from Aruba. Now the thought of blue green water is floating in my head. Hoo Hoo put that there? Take your camera everywhere, working, playing golf. Leave the safety off. You did and several hole shots in one after another happened! Thanks!

Ed some birds can be very aggressive when you come close to their nests.  I don't know about Owls, but Blue Jays are extremely aggressive.  Owls are much larger than Blue Jays so I would not want to have any thing to do with finding out how aggressive they can get.

Ed, glad you survived the owl experience, with a few nice photos to boot.  Would not want to test my luck with those claws.

Hi Ed, Must have been a lovely get away to Aruba!  Funny that you had to contend with an attack owl near a sand trap!  Sand traps are hard enough let alone staying clear of an attack owl at your legs or pants!

Great photos!

Gloria

Good morning Ed Silva.  I did not know that there was a burrowing owl. I could understand its aggressive behavior especially if there were checks in the nest.

Great photo of the Burrowing Owl.  There is a good chance that it was protecting a nest.

Ed, thanks to you I just learned something new! I never heard of a burrowing owl before; nor would I ever guess they like to burrow in sand traps. What a great post! Your pictures are beautiful! That owl let you get close enough for a wonderful photograph. Those big yellow eyes just pop out at you!

I've never been to Aruba before and wouldn't even know they had owls on the island until you wrote this unbelievable and very fascinating story! I enjoyed it Ed!
