Clearly we all have had embarrassing moments, I did not have to ponder too hard about this question. Lucky for me it was very early in my Real Estate career and as most people do, I have learned from the errors of my ways. I was relatively new less than a year in the business. My office was on Beacon Hill in Boston, MA. The coveted area compares to Beverly Hills here in CA.
Needless to say I was very motivated and a potential client walked in and wanted to Lease a home on Beacon Hill. Keep in mind we were looking in the high end at the time on Lewisburg Square, (where not too long after then Senator John Kerry who hooked up with Theresa Heinz of the Heinz Ketchup fame and bought a home nearby).
My client was in his late 50’s and we discussed many subjects as I was driving him around in my Subaru XT that he barely fit in. Maybe he should buy instead of rent and I could go on and on. Had I have been more skilled and knowledgeable he would have bought. Instead we found this great lease listing for about $4000+ per month. Keep in mind this was about 20 years agoJ. He had a house in the suburbs of Boston in the affluent Wellesley area where famous Boston Celtic Basket Ball players, Attorneys and Coaches lived.
He then said ok we need to show this to her and see what she thinks? I did not think much of it since I clicked with my client. Next meeting was back at my office walking distance to the property. MY client shows up on time with this very cute twenty something hot girl and I was very excited. Everything was on track, they were a bit early for the appointment, and we were five minutes walking distance away from the property.
So we had time to chat… needless to say I asked him if her daughter was going to Boston University or nearby? He had a good laugh she immediately hated me…if eyes could have killed I would not be writing this post…. Needless to say the only saving grace was that the home was perfect for her and he would not let her sour the deal just because of my “extraneous comment”….
So I had my biggest Lease transaction and everyone was happy…well almost. Just on a side note the Lease went to a famous Financial Institution, the checks were all cashier checks no record of any names…I have learned a lot about creative ways to hide true tenants, and true lessees in a contract. Never the less twenty years later am I still embarrassed about my Extraneous Comment! Needless to say I have learned discretion and since then had many supper affluent clients who shall remain nameless in the greater Los Angeles area.
Thank you Kathleen I would not have done this post if it was not for our friendship:)))
