Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was born Jan. 15, 1929, and on the third Monday of every January, we celebrate his life and what he stood for. Although the day has been a federal holiday since 1986, in 1994 Congress designated it as a national day of service - "a day on, not a day off."

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) leads the effort for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems. Organizations and individuals are encouraged to support and implement projects that increase economic opportunities, improve education, support veterans and military families, and help communities prepare for and recover from disaster.

Visit MLKDay.gov for a variety of free resources on the day, including scholastic curriculum, a tool to find a MLK Day project in your area, toolkits for planning projects, webinars, and regular updates.

"By making service part of our daily lives, we can help realize Dr. King's dream," says CNCS. "Together, we demonstrate what it means to be citizens."

We have a day of service for MLK Day as well here in Charlotte, which I also posted about last week. Hopefully, lots of communities will support the day of service.
