God is Not Cool with Racism Either!
Though things are not perfect yet I think that our country has come a long way forward in ending racism and the acceptance of racism. Certainly an improvement from when I was young, and even more of an improvement over what it was like when my parents or grandparents were young.
I am happy to see these improvements and saddened when racism shows it's ugly face from time to time.
In my role as a Franciscan minister I often have occasion to council and teach other Catholics, and it is in this role that I had an occasion to start meeting and talking with an older fellow who called me seeking guidance.
He was practicing many traditions of the church, attending mass often, yet he knew that something was missing so he asked around and eventually called me.
A few months into our talks he happened to mention that he really did not like people from a particular race.
His statement really shocked me, especially since it has been many decades since I have heard such a statement.
Next I asked him to clarify a bit to make sure that I was understanding what he was talking about before letting him know that this was not only unacceptable in today's society but very out of line in the eyes of God and the church.
I explained to him that to grow as a catholic or any kind of christian would require a change of heart in this area.
And let him know that the teachings of the church are very clear on this matter.
Further more it was important to explain that God created all life and all of His people are precious to Him regardless of race or circumstance.
And that it was important to look for and see the good in all of Gods people, something that can be hard to do sometimes but is essential if we want to grow closer to God.
Sometimes the only glimpse that we see of God is His reflection in the faces of His people.
How can we claim to love God until we learn to love the people who are made in His image.
We had a long discussion on the subject and since then my friend has been working on this, learning, praying, and looking at Gods people in a different way.
It is good that we can continue to grow no matter how old we are when we decide to change.
