ActiveRain Changes...What If You Could Decide!

By

All the recent changes here in the Rain, and both the acceptance and ire they created/caused for Rainers, got me thinking again (I know, scary!). If the staff gave us the ability to add, change, delete, or implement any one thing, what would we choose? Well...what would you do?

AR ChangesMy choice would be to give us the ability to perform 301 redirects on our own posts. Say what? Of all the things I could have chosen many of you are scratching your head thinking I must have gone completely off the deep end. That. Is. Possible.

The reason I would choose that is because my blogging (and most likely yours) has evolved over time. For quite awhile I posted haphazardly here without regard to SEO or consumer appeal.

However, after watching several AR webinars, and paying attention to what successful bloggers were doing here to generate business, my content started changing. Basically, some of my content became more aesthetically pleasing in a more organized format. Yes, my blog is still a work in progress but many of my methods are consistently bringing in new clients.

What's my point? While some of my early FAQs, community/subdivision reports, and general RE content still get good leverage in the SERPs, my newer content (often on the same topic) is better, longer, more appealing, etc. If I had the ability to point those old posts to the new posts (i.e. 2011 subdivision abc points to 2014 subdivision abc) I would get much of the Google Juice from those old posts pointing to the new posts and eventually only those new posts would show up in the SERPs. The new posts would be stronger (meaning they have a better chance to stay on page 1) and definitely of a more refined quality that consumers might find more endearing.

Your choice may be crazier than mine or perhaps something very simple. The choice is yours...What would you add, change, delete, or implement?

Anita, we had a chance to talk through your idea today with our lead engineer and an SEO consultant we use. The general opinion on whether or the 301 redirects from older posts would actually help the person's SEO was a mixed bag. If you have a bunch of 301 redirects it basically removes all of that old content, which makes those posts less valuable. However, if you have a bunch of backlinks from outside websites to the old posts, the 301's might help.

This was the best recommendation we got from the SEO guru... If you are looking at this through the lense of a recurring post - say a market report  - the absolute best thing to do is write a SINGLE blog post on that topic and keep updating it every month. Google loves posts that get updated, and it loves posts that keep seeing traffic month after month after month.

We're keeping an eye on all of the other feedback in this post and sincerely appreciate it.  The next projects you will see coming your way are:

  1. Overhaul the points system so it simpler and much more reliable.
  2. A cool new "Following" page so you can quickly search for the people you follow on AR.
  3. Major updates on the Daily Drop email so it is easy to read on your phone and drives more engagement on the site.
  4. Sprinkling some featured questions to the home page to build some momentum around that new tool.

How was that for a long answer. I want my 6 points!!

Kris Neese I was hoping you would weigh in. Yes, I am aware it basically makes the older post disappear in Google's eyes and that is exactly what I would want to happen. For instance, if I created a post in 2011 about mold that was not very aesthetically pleasing and only a couple of hundred words long then created another similar post about mold in 2014 that was over 1K words with better photos, etc. I would love to 301 the old post to the new one, especially if the content was very similar. It would be unlikely for Google to rank them both and could actually penalize them both for being too similar from the same author.

Having a 301 would eliminate that issue, make the old post "go away" but pass much of its Google Juice to the new post which is where I want it anyway.  In hindsight, the smart move is to just make the 2011 post more robust without creating a similar 2014 post.

I'm not so much worried about market reports or other posts that have statistics that change each month as those posts are unique enough to stand on their own...in these instances, doing what Debbie Gartner mentioned (daisy chaining) works well. It is the static posts that so many of us keep creating over and over that could benefit from the 301s.

Thanks so much for listing all the other things being considered too. I know many have wanted to see a list.

Anita, looks like we will be getting more changes, and I am wondering if AR will just delete outside blogs.

I think if I could pick one thing it would be to have AR post have the same quick search engine results that it used to.  There was a time that if I wrote a post on North Idaho lakes I could go to google in about an hour and see it.  I was often shocked to be looking up something and see one of my posts that I had recently written.  The last couple of month that has changed and is no longer as effective as it once was.  I don't know if that is because we are now a subdomain activerain.trulia.com or what but I would love to see us get back to where we were.

Anita, I like the way you think. I think Kris is right. Bob Stewart kept saying to update our one post with each month's new information. That is so hard for me to do but would get the word count way up. I may give it a try on a few posts the first of the month.

Judi: I try to figure out what I can...the rest I just have to move on from. Too many homes to sell!

Rebecca: That would be my guess. In my mind it is duplicate content anyway.

Rain: I remember those days as well. I think Google had a lot to do with that.

Debbie: It would become unreadable if we did that each month for market reports. 12 reports a month x 400 words (just guessing) condensed into 1 is great but add that up over 2-3 years and no consumer is going to take the time to read that novel. My concern is...why does AR harp on us producing more and more content (it obviously helps AR in the SERPs) if what is best for us is to actually produce less by adding our monthly content to an existing post.

I would like to see the Blog Roll come back in one easy click at the top of the page. From most recent to older in order.

I would like to see the Find an Agent by map come back the way it was. Easy to use and direct to State, County, City, Neighborhood with easy clicks and blog posts by those agents in the middle. I used it to find agents in other places. Customers used it find me and become a client.

Wish: Does anyone remember the very old days of AR? There used to be little photos of all of us who were on site at that minute. It was at the very top of the page. You could click on that to go to their blog. Often, that was a good way to enter into a conversation on a blog post in real time. (IRL) It made for some excellent interactions! I understand that there are more of us now but are there really that many people on here at the same exact time?

Anita, I find that a lot of this is malarkey, the real goal is to help AR-Trulia to be on page one and the feedback is not to put you on page one...just saying..now if I was king I would like the old ways back when it was less corporate and more personable... the days when Brad A would chime in with good advice not misleading advice to make you better rather than Trulia AR better...Endre

I really like your suggestion, Anita, and especially that it generated a terrific comment from Kris about some other changes. So often things do change but nothing is said in advance about it, e.g., the log in feature (unless I missed somethin,g it just started happening but not with any consistency).

My wish would be for an easier, and perhaps more robust photo editor

Sharon: I know staffers have seen this so hopefully they will tackle the photo issues.

Jeff: I think that has been the #1 request. You listening staff?!

Yep, still listening!

The photo editor is a tricky one, we actually just did an overhaul on that one a few months back to simplify it a good deal. We have some some known bugs dealing with aligning images that are slated to get fixed in our January release, but moving to a new tool isn't going to be happening any time soon.

Endre, our traffic on ActiveRain saw a 40% jump when we moved to the activerain.trulia.com subdomain, so the advantage goes to our community on that exchange.
