You never know what you will experience when visiting New York City. The night started innocently enough with a train ride in and a walk towards Rockefeller Center.
On my way, my father called and asks, "Where are you?" I said, "I am in the city to see the tree lighting with some friends." His voice became a bit tense and he responded to me, " be careful, the verdict about Eric Garner's case came out and people are not happy."
I honestly had no idea that took place yesterday evening before he called because I do not watch the News. I said, " relax dad, all is fine I don't see anything and I am just going to the tree lighting." We ended the call and a minute later I turn the corner to see this!
With out hesitation I began snapping photographs and observed the protest. It was very peaceful and well organized. I have to say the events that have unfolded to bring these protest about are unfortunate, yet on the flip side, it is great to see "young people" finally stand up and together.
In all, reports said only 30 people were arrested and many of them have been let go this morning. One police car was set on fire in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Violence will not solve violent problems.
None the less, we witnessed history! And what a journey it was to try and get to the tree lighting ceremony. We had to travel back through Times Square and while doing that we came cross even more protesters, this time blocking traffic.
Say what you will, but this was an amazing sight. Even some of the cars sitting in the protest were honking their horns in support and chanting the words created from this event.
Eventually, we were able to make our way around the protesters and barricades to connect with our main destination of the evening.
The tree lighting!
Afterward, we made our way to Bryant park to enjoy some freshly made sushi and hot chocolate while watching the ice skaters.
You never know what you will experience when in New York City.
