How to have a conversation with your customers on social media. When I was a teenager, my family moved from New Jersey to Massachusetts.

If you've never been to Massachusetts, it's a state where everyone talks funny.  They say "wicked" a lot - and they aren't talking about witches.  I mean, come on - they can't even pronounce the name of their star city.  "Baaaa-stin"?  Where the hell is that?

So imagine my surprise when everyone started making fun of ME and asking me to repeat words like "water", "chocolate" and "coffee".

It's something that stuck with me for years.

I recently was chatting through LinkedIn with a colleague in Canada.  She told me I spell words in a funny way.  And here I was thinking that SHE was the one who can't spell.

Sort of makes you stop and think about the whole concept of customization, doesn't it?

Did you know that there are actually some cultures where shaking hands is an insult?

There's a message of marketing in here for you.  Know your platform and speak natively to people on it.  Think of social media as being a giant cocktail party where everyone has different accents.  You can't have the same conversations in the same ways on Facebook vs. Instagram.  Pinterest vs. Snapchat.  Twitter vs. Google+.  You may be speaking the same language, but everyone has different accents.

But doesn't the same go for marketing?  Just as we can't sit down with an automotive group and roll out the same marketing strategy as we're using on a restaurant group, the same goes for your individual businesses.

If you're a real estate agent and you're marketing a million dollar listing in one neighborhood and a $200K listing in another, do you market them the same way?  Not if you're successful.

Today's message is simple.  Know your platform.  Know your demographic.  Start marketing with an accent.

Good morning Kyle,

I know about the handshake one the hard way but eventually sold them a home and have become friends.

My Grandmother was from Cananda and took a while to learn what she was spelling!

As for Boston isn't that where beans and tea come from!

Make yourself a great day.

Kyle, this brings up many things that I could address. One is that having lived in Oregon (pronounced Orygun as we will gleefully write--if you really need help), it's bothersome when you hear a commentator or a voiceover done for a local commercial and pronounce our state incorrectly--so annoying!! Like saying Illinoise instead of Illinoi(s) with a silent "s".

Accents can be so delightful and having lived in many places on the east coast as well as having studied theatre (and having a trained ear for that sort of thing), it's really fun for me to ask about where someone grew up or was born when I detect a dialect of some kind. It brings about interesting conversation, maybe a connection, and allows me to understand the client a bit better.

Accents CAN be  barrier or a door to open up, inviting interest, humor or whatnot. I went from living as a kid outside of Buffalo, NY to moving to Richmond, VA--a WILD change in accents and words! For example, "faar" was actually "fire".  "Poosh the laight", actually meant "turn off the light"...anyway, you get my drift!

Swimming with the multi color schools of fish that dart, dip, dive. Your way is not the only way or the best one. Have had plenty of funny talking Jersey types we list and sell with over the years.. And the ones from farming areas talk different than the ones from Hoboken, Elizabeth, urban areas.

And some repeat themselves with "back in Jersey, back in Jersey lament about the way things rolled there, but done slightly different here." Some end up moving back to the familiar Garden State locaton that they were earlier in one major hurry to leave.

Find your place as a happy raisin under the sun. Or you make those around you miserable because you have not. And wished it was like your last home that stays where it is. Does not make the journey. Some folks are never happy where they live and Eeyores, malcontents.

Kyle Reyes - I market MUCH differently on Facebook than on Twitter. They are two completely different audiences!

While I would never intentionally insult anyone I don't worry about trying to be completely audience specific.  I find more and more I'm surprised about who my audience is on twitter and pinterest, so I just try to be my genuine self and hope that is good enough.

As far as I'm concerned, all of Y'ALL talk funny up there in the North.

But when it comes to sales and marketing, you are so correct.  Make sure you know your audience.

Good morning Kyle. I don't market any differently on any venues, as my primary marketing is my blogging. I get response in all the venues as I share my business and personal experiences. I get response from all the venues where I post, so will keep the same path.

Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Realtor (503)755-2905 I always said I'd marry a woman with a southern accent.  Turns out I was wrong...but I couldn't ask for someone better.  I agree with all of your points!

Andrew Mooers I'm happy with where I am now.  I've got Joe Petrowsky, high taxes and crappy weather.
