Most people realize that the purpose of a roof is to get water off of it.  You simply don't want water up there any longer than it has to be.  Seems like a simple concept, right?

Well, some in the roofing industry don't seem to get it.  Look at the picture below.

Bird stop

The clay colored metal under the curves of the roof tiles is called a bird stop.  As the name indicates, it is to stop birds from nesting under the curves of the roof tiles.  However, there is a problem.  If you look at the very right of the roof, there is a metal flashing from the roof to the wall.  This flashing will usually accumulate a lot of water and have it drain off the roof.  The problem is that the bird stop is acting like a dam.  It needs to be trimmed as indicated by the red box with the white box inside that says "remove."  Once the bird stop is trimmed it will allow the roof-to-wall flashing to drain properly.

It is not a complicated or expensive remedy, however it will deter future (and possibly serious) problems.

I hope this gives you a little more information about a home inspection and its value.  Be safe out there.

Good information.  Something to watch out for on our ends... hopefully our inspectors will too.  Shouldn't you have called this your Dam Blog?
