If you have ever wondered why Washington DC buildings are so "short" in comparisonto other major urban centers in the United States,  the answer is very simple - The Cairo Condominiums! Construction of this building in 1894 as DC's first residential skyscraper at 164 feet tall resulted in building height restrictions of 130 feet that still define Washington today. If you are looking for a condo in DC in an iconic building in a neighborhood that has a great nightlife and is eminently walkable, then you can't do better than the Cairo at 1615 Q Street, NW!  Find condos similar to the Cairo right here!

The Cairo Condo Units

There are 168 units at the Cairo ranging in size from studios of 350 square feet to a two bedroom one bath condo of approximately 1070 square feet.  Since the Cairo was built in 1894 by Thomas Franklin Schneider, it has undergone several transformations. It has been an apartment building, a hotel, a derelict building on its last legs, and a well loved condo building.  Unlike newly constructed buildings, there are no "standard" finishes since each unit has been renovated through the years since it was converted to condos in 1979.

The Cairo's Condos are Rich with Amenities

The Cairo is filled with people who appreciate history and love to be at the center of things! The Cairo  offers 24 hour security and a concierge front desk,  an outdoor terrace and garden area, and the best roof deck in Washington DC for July 4th Frireworks. Washers and dryers are allowed in the individual condos, which sets it apart from many other older buildings. The condo fees range from approximately $300 a month for the smallest units to around $850 a month for the larger condos. The Cairo is very pet friendly!

The historic Cairo in Washington, DC is a great place to call home. You will not be disappointed if you are lucky enough to call this home! You can find condos for sale at the Cairo (if there are any available today) as well as all available condos and townhouses for sale in DuPont Circle of Washington, DC.

Living in the Dupont Circle area of Washington DC

Of course, Dupont Circle is defined by its beautiful traffic circle, named after Admiral Samuel Francis Dupont, a Civil War Admiral.  The fountain was commissioned by the Admiral's family as a memorial to him and was sculpted by Daniel Chester French, the famous sculptor, and architect Henry Bacon, who also collaborated on the Lincoln Memorial.  Did you know that Dupont Circle was once known as the Pacific Circle?

There are famous museums near Dupont Circle, including the Phillips Museum and the Heurich Museum, and some of the best art galleries in the city. Shops abound, including the very special Kramer Bookstore, and you will never go hungry in Dupont Circle.  For a great Sunday, start with shopping at the farmers market beside the PNC bank at Dupont Circle, then celebrate with brunch at Afterworks on Connecticut Avenue, next go the Phillips Museum to visit the Degas collection, have lunch at the Agora, which specializes in Greek and Turkish small plates, take a long walk along Massachusetts Avenue admiring the many embassy buildings, and finish off with a visit to one of the many trendy restaurants like Komi and then listen to some jazz at the Tabard Inn lounge.

Aloha Lisa,

I bet the original Romanesque architecture of the building is amazing. The bas relief  name in the Art Nouveau font intrigues me and I wonder if it had any Kemeti architectural details in the common areas and if it still does?  Thanks for sharing.

A hui hou,

Lise... I remember when Dupont Circle was a dangerous place to stay away from back in the 1960's. So happy to see that this neighborhood along with many others in the DC area have become places where people want to live.

Nina Hollander  We both remember Washington in those days! I love sharing my hometown with newcomers and giving them a little of that history so they understand how far the city has come!  My daughter danced with the Washington Ballet on U Street at the Lincoln Theater several years ago - next to Ben's Chili Bowl - that area was all burned out in the 68 riot - and now little girls from the suburbs were dancing there!
