Real Estate Terminology of the Day: Gentrification

By
Real Estate Appraiser RD4378

Today's Real Estate Term is Gentrification

Gentrification is the renovation of deteriorated urban neighborhoods by middle and upper income people which typically results in higher property values but displaces low income families due to higher rents and rising prices. Often times this includes the conversion of rental properties to condominiums and results in an increase in home ownership and a decrease in rental properties.

This word has been around for a while. It would be nice if somehow lower income folks could get included in the mix
