The Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch in Gilbert Arizona was created as a unique way to combine water resource development with wildlife habitat. The Riparian Preserve is a total of 110 acres of which 70 acres make up the 7 different water basins. An additional lake is filled with reclaimed water and is designated as an urban fishing resource through the Arizona Game and Fish Department.
Approximately 298 species of birds have been identified on the site as well as many other amphibians, reptiles, and mammals that have made this place their home as well. Over 4.5 miles worth of trails weave through the Preserve and there are educational plaques on wildlife and vegetation throughout. A floating boardwalk crossing the northern end of the lake allows visitors a close up view of fish and ducks on the water.
The hidden secret at the Riparian Preserve is The Gilbert Rotary Centennial Observatory(GRCO). The observatory is open every Friday and Saturday evening at nightfall September through June. The GRCO is owned by the Town of Gilbert and operated by the Riparian Institute. It houses a 16-inch diameter Meade, modified Richey-Cretien scope. The Riparian Preserve and the Observatory is completely free to the public.
