A few months ago I was not convinced that video had much value in a real estate blog and commented about my opinion on The Real Estate Tomato on "What Is The Future Of The Real Estate Blog?"

  1. Video means you have to wait for it to load, before knowing much about it's value.
  2. Video means that you have to watch and listen in to see if it has interest or value for you...no skimming a written post to see if you want to read more in depth.
  3. Video is harder to do well and there may be a "cringe" or embarassment factor to the viewer for watching a poorly done video production.
  4. Watching someone drone on and on without getting to the point is tedious.
  5. Video from the point of view of the blogger invloves extra costs to do video well.
  6. Not all bloggers will "present" well to the camera.
  7. And the most improtant factor for a blogger...it's not professional to video blog on camera in your PJ's or (?) at 3AM!

During the discussion I changed my mind, and decided that there was some good potential for effective video blogging...but I think that my list above must be addressed so that no one *clicks* away!

So I am now going to ride the video wave with many of my fellow ActiveRain blggers....

My New Flip Video Camera!

...I bought my Flip Video last Monday!

Deborah, do you mind if I ask you what the cost for the video camera is?  I want to start doing video's but didn't quite know what to look for.  Thanks. Teresa

How is the quality?  Traditional hand-held camcorders are so affordable these days, I would be really interested to see the difference in quality.  Certainly, a smaller device like that would be very useful for previewing houses for people!

Hi Teresa, I bought it at Best Buy for $149.00 and it's about $139.00 on Amazon...I did not want to wait, so I bought it at BB.  A lot of AR members are buying them to use because it's supposed to be very easy to use, so there will probably be lots of members posting "How tos"...that's why I choose the Flip Video!

Hi Brendan, I have only tested it a couple of times and immediatly DELETED what I did because I was just playing around, so I can't give you a good answer...but what I saw looked good...it was the cameraperson (me!) who needs practice!

YOu have a great list.

I was watching a few videos recently, and it is just obvious that this is a different animal. People, whose blogs I like to read, do poor videos that I did not like to watch (of course, with some eceptions).

Just watching someone talking and talking and talking with poor video and sound quality equates to a torture, but the main point is: if that is video, it should be showing something. Or you better off with a tet, and have your photo net to it. And it would be a much better solution.

If you are talking about houses, and in the video not a single house is shown, what is the point of it?

I bought mine on Wednesday, got it at Sam's Club for $139.00, I had bought one on Monday at Walmart and took it back when I realized it was only a 1 gig (gives you a half hour) and the price was $149.00, the one at Sam's is a 2 gig (hour of recording) and only $139.00.  The picture quality is great and sound is not bad. Ease of use is phenomenal.  You can also take a snap of any picture on the video and save it as a picture file.  Everyone should have one.

Deborah, It looks fun...and EASY, actually something I can learn to use.  I can't wait to see a video to see how it comes out.

I just purchased my camera today..I found the 1gb (30 minute camera) on clearance at Target for $64.00!! I was so excited...I had to ask for it because I did not see it and they had it behind the counter...I think all Targets have these 50% off to make room for the 2gb one...I am going to have fun with it! Good luck with yours!
