Having a portable generator as a backup for when you lose power can be a life saver, especially when you're without power for days on end (IRENE 2011, HALLOWEEN Nor'easter 2011 & of course SUPER STORM SANDY 2012) But the real icing on the cake is to make sure your electrical panel is properly wired to a transfer switch. Depending on what your service is rated at (typically 100 or 200 amps), 10 circuits is all you'll need to keep the necessities running (FYI: well water pumps & sump pumps are important to calculate in if you have them).
Start with what you need first, then add what you want... Chances are that you'll be able to run between 50% - 75% of your household circuits. Have your home's electrical system evaluated first to make sure you match the right transfer switch to the right portable generator. If you're looking to run most (80% +) of the major systems in your home (central A/C, stove, dishwasher, electric water heater, washer & dryer, etc.), investing in a whole home generator system might be your best option.
Realistically, for less than $2000, investing in a quality portable generator & transfer switch will be a great addition to your home.
