Stand up paddle boarding, generally called SUP, is a sport that’s really growing in popularity all over the world. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s just like it sounds. You stand on a board, similar to a surfboard, only larger, and maneuver through the water by using a single blade paddle. It has become an activity that people are really starting to enjoy at Apple Valley Lake!

To get started with SUP, you’ll need to get a board. A good board for beginners needs to be one that you’ll be able to stay on, so select one that’s at least 10 feet long, 2.5 feet wide and 4 inches thick. Other things to consider when choosing a board are how heavy it is and if it will fit in or on your car.  Always, always wear a life jacket! To launch, begin in a calm place of the lake where the board’s not touching the bottom. If youree not on the water at Apple Valley Lake, you can always start at a beach. Start by kneeling and making a few strokes, then stand up carefully, one leg at a time, in the middle of your board. It’s a good idea to keep your knees bent a little to help with balance as you start your journey.

While you’re out paddle boarding, practice maneuvering by following these simple motions. To move forward in a straight line, take a few strokes on one side, then alternate to the other side. There are two ways to turn your board - To go right, put your paddle near the tail and pull it toward the front, turning your body to the right. Bending your knees will make the turn smoother. To go left, put your paddle in the right side of the water and turn your body to the left while pulling toward the tail. Your turns will get smoother with practice.

The best time to Paddle Board Apple Valley Lake is in the morning or after dinner on the weekends or anytime during the week.
