I believe that we can all agree that as business owners we all have three things in common:
1) We are in the marketing business. This is what keeps the pipeline full.
2) We are in the sales business. This is what keeps food on the table.
3) We are all in the people business. It is our personal relationships with others that make people like us and want to do business with us.
That being said, most business owners are great technicians. IMHO, this is the Yang or masculine, left-brained side of the business. Technicians are good at what they do. They make sure all the "I's" are dotted and every "T" is crossed. In other words, they possess great technical knowledge, they understand the system and they control the know-how. They exude an air of confidence. All great masculine traits. However, the technical side of the business is only 50% of the of the equation. It is the personal relationship or Yang side that many technicians struggle with. It is this part that balances the equation. It is this side of the business that makes a huge difference as to whether a business will survive or fail.
Statistics have shown that the vast majority of real estate agents are "amiable" or people people. They relish in the Ying or right-brained side of business. They often employ the "healing touch" aspect. They are creative, playful, spiritual and intuitive. These qualities allow them to be very effective at engaging the "touchy feely" or administering a nurturing treatment. This also makes them vulnerable as some folks tend to want to take advantage of them.
So where is the balance? I found mine when I began to surround myself with folks who had a similar vision and employed my opposite (Yang) side. In doing so, I now have a balance, both Ying and Yang. There are many out there who do not or are not in a position where they can have or hire other people on their team. In this case, talk with a trusted adviser, spouse or significant other. They are often your opposite. Hopefully, the two mindsets will blend and create the perfect balance for your business.
